It is true that chains stretch. generally there is a tensioner that takes up any slack, preventing chain from jumping time. Un less you have tons of miles on there, I'd look at the tensioner first. I don't know your engine...are you certain it has a chain or a belt? (belts are more prone to failure and then the mechanic may indeed be correct.)

What is the issue you are having? Chains do strech but to to the point of failure there should be some major performance issues. If there is a lack of oil changes this could cause premature chain failure.

Low oil level will cause the tensioner to not work adequitly.

Also I have replaced the VVTi controller on the intke cam a few times for lack of performance, always has trouble codes to go along with poor performance tough.

On my Honda 200x 1984 timing jumps one tooth after setting kicked first time ride jumped out.65.50 wisco big bore kit.12 tooth drive socket. Set tenchner til chain sound stops?,

2 questions come to mind has the new sprocket got the same pitch ( distance between teeth ) as the crank shaft sprocket as this will make the chain jump out after a few degrees of movement. A quick check is to wrap the chain around the sprocket and see if there are links that do not sit fully around the teeth. There are different pitches for teeth and chains ( BA-- AM and metric)

Look for some Youtube videos on this repair. If I remember correctly the links on this chain have different color metal for the spots that the cam tooth goes against. When each side is in the proper tooth the right and left colored links will be on the cam mark and the crank mark should be on the timing TDC mark. Sounds like the slack you describe is wrong and a tooth is off because the tensioner is allowing slack.. You need to slip a tooth one way or the other until the tensioner has room to be in a neutral position.

2002 oldsmobile alero timing chain jumping teeth

Not common unless the car has not been maintained. Without regular oil changes, the chain eventually stretches, the sprockets wear, and then the chain may jump a tooth. It is more common with overhead cams, because the chains are much longer and rely on tensioners that wear out.

I have been fixing cars for 40 yrs and unless the chain adjusters are well worn they do not jump ,i have seen engine with 500,000 miles on them and they run abeit a bit noisey but they run ,if anything these engine are hydraulic tappets and this could be your problem but then it would have to run with no oil in the engine and the big ends would be clanking as well ,if the oil light didnt come on then i dont think you have damaged anything although the tappets might sound a bit tappety as this is furthest from the oil pump but bringing the oil up to level should cure this unless the cams run dry and this only happened with the old ford cortina with the OHC engine ,As for timing marks no idea but a quick check is to remove the no1 plug and use a long thin screwdriver and bring pist to to top then look at the cams on no1 and they should be pointing up and outwards then look for the timing marks some engines use a slot on the rear of the cams thats normally level with the head except the VW diesel its at a angle of 20? .Cannot honestly see the timing chain jumping though unless the adjuster is worn away but it would be clattering like mad when it was running
