You do not mention the year make or model of the vehicle so I can only give you a general guess at the answer.

The back up switch actuator in the shifter body is mis-aligned or broken. If this is a center console shifter the fix is fairly easy, the console need to be removed to expose the switch and wires.

If the shifter is on that dash or steering column it is more difficult. On a dash shifter you have to lay on the floor and work under the dash to get to the switch.

If this is a steering column shifter, then the repair is best left to a professional as you will have to remove the steering wheel and disengage the air bag. This can be a very dangerous as a mistake might deploy the air bag and cause you serious injury.

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1996 plymouth voyager reverse lights not working

They are full of baloney. Ther's a switch underneath the shift lever that engages when you shiht into reverse. The mechanic probably loosened it when reconnecting the shift linkage to the new tranny.

Thay may have knocked the switch out of position, which would cause the lights to go on in some other gear than reverse. That would be the first thing I check.

Good luck !

SOURCE: 2005 Pathfinder no reverse lights

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced

I just failed my N.J. state inspection for the following reason. Can you help? The white back-up lights stay on at all times. I checked the b/u light fuse and found it to be good. Any ideas what I can...

The transmission switch that powers the reverse light switches is stuck in the ON position, this is quite a common fault.
The switch is mounted on the transmission casing near where the selector rods enter the casing on a manual shift and in the selector housing on automatic cars.

2004 f 150 reverse lights don't come one

The reverse light circuit runs through the Transmission range sensor or Neutral safety switch as some call it. The switch is located on the outside of the transmission over the post that the shift cable connects to and when the shift lever is moved the switch is moved along with the cable and shift post on the ******. It is adjustable so pay attention to the location of the old switch and use it as a guide to adjust the new one. I am assuming this is a automatic transmission since you omitted that information.

The reverse lights are turned on by the transmission range selector switch, it may be out of adjustment or defective. It is located on the transmission case on the drivers side of the truck. Isn't this still under warranty? 3/36?

Back up light not working

hello, the back up lights are usually on the same fuse as the tail lights so if they are working it's not a fuse, if the tail lights are not working replace the tail fuse. Otherwise the problem is most the backup light switch, on the manual transmission it's a separate switch located on the transmission on an automatic it is incorporated into the neutral start switch also located on the transmission but on the shaft where the shift selector attaches.
