The fluis is quite a bit higher than the third line and is a darkish brown, maybe even close to black at the tip

The car needs to be running with the transmission warm, (drive around for at least 10 minutes) Place the car in neutral. Pull the stick wipe it off and place it back in the transmission. Reads just like an oil stick, want fluid in the safe range (checked pattern) area.

You said automatic trans is it manual?? Why inappropriate if manual do this:

If you go underneath, there might be either a large hex or a square that a 3/4inch ratchet will fit. There are two plugs, make sure you take off the top one, the bottom one is to drain it, top to check it of course. it you have something like a cotter pin or a tie strap, bend it and dip part of it in. Be very careful not to drop anything in there! The fluid is a little bit under the check hole, it's fine, if some comes out while checking it, its ok... if lots comes out... either you pulled the wrong plug or it's just over filled. Now, if the color is bright red, it's great, if it's red, it's fine, if it's brownish red, it's passible, if it's brown, you need a tranny service, if it's black..... you should really get your tranny looked at. Haha. Hope this helps.

    Otherwise the previous answer stands

Transmission fluid is measured in pints. It is a hydraulic fluid and expands with heat. The three lines are closest to the tip= cold level, middle line = full 'normal operating temperature' and top level = full hot. You should check as outlined above add if below the cold line, otherwise your fine, unless for some reason your overfilled. Your fluid should be pinkish if dark it means it's burnt and should be replaced

Dark brown to black is not a good color for transmission fluid you might want to change it.

if it's an automatic, find the transmission dipstick. if a manual, you have to pull out the 'add' plug on the transmission from underneath.

How to Check Automatic Transmission Fluid?

run the vehicle until the engine temp guage is in the yellow .
with the engine running, open the hood and pull the transmission dip stick.
read the stick and replace fluid that has been lost , or whatever...So long as the engine is warm (hot) the reading should be accurate on the dipstick.

How do i (a girl) add transmission repair fluid to '97 Automatic Ford Escort?

Open the hood and look for either a red handle for a dipstick or one marked trans. Remove the dipstick and ,with a funnel, pour the fluid into the tube the dipstick came out of.

How do i add transmission fluid into a 1993 Ford Ranger?

Automatic Transmission?

The fluid level needs to be checked with the engine running, the vehicle on a level surface, and the transmission in park. Remove the Transmission dipstick, wipe clean, and reinsert. Immediately pull it out again and check the fluid level. If it is not where it should be fluid can be added through the dipstick tube. A half a quart can make a big difference in fluid level so start small.

It will take a while for the new fluid to clear out of the tube to get an accurate reading after you add the new fluid.

How do i add fluid too the automatic transmission

Use a funnel and you add the fluid right thru the dipstick tube. Try not to overfill if you can this can cause the transmission to slip.

Where to put gear box fluid in a ford mondeo 2002 automatic it takes a long time to change gear

The automatic transmission fluid goes in the same place where the Trani dipstick is.. It is called the filler tube.. Just use a funnel..

When checking the fluid - have the engine running in park..
Trani fluid is measured in pints not quarts on the dipstick..

The shifting problem might not be from low Trani fluid.. It could be caused by other things..

IF the fluid is low - that could cause the trani to slip and cause internal damage..

Good luck..

Transmission

If it is an automatic the best thing to use is chrysler automatic trans fluid Most 1998 Ford F150s take Mercon V...also check for leak. The transmission dipstick is located on the passengers side rear. Near the firewall / or back of the engine. The dipstick is color yellow or red. use long funnel.
