get it totally clean
drive 5 miles
look for leak
the key is to find WHAT is leaking.?
can be many things,
bad clogged PCV valve causing all things to leak or worse.
gaskets
seals
0-rings.
casing flaws that cause leaks (aluminum porosity issues)
until WHAT leaks is found
there will be NO costs, quotes, ever.
if not handy then just get it fixed, what choices are there?
not handy.?
sell it, ignore it. or?
no sane man quotes unknown repairs.
unless said man wants to eat losses. big time.
handy?
use IR dye in the oil with lamp IR .
then run car and see the dye marks as it leaks.
now you know both ways. (old and new)
leak on.
when mine did that it was a bad oil pressure switch it's located just below the oil filter it's long like round tube and has a plug in the end and screws in below the oil filter .....
it sounds like you oil is going out or the oil pump screen is stop up,check to see if your gage reads 40 to 60 lbs when its cold then if it does it could be oil pump or cam bernings but find a oil pressure gage to see if it might be your gage be bad or oil pump good luck...
Stop driving it immediately. You can have a few things going on. If no oil is getting to the top of the motor then you either have low oil, a blocked passage, spun a bearing or failed pump (sounds like failed oil pump). If you continue to drive it you will overheat the moving parts with too much friction and seize the pistons possibly throwing a rod through the block. This needs to be diagnosed with an oil pressure gauge but do not drive it. Check the oil level first and if good level it needs to be diagnosed further but sounds like the oil pump has failed, hopefully you have parked it before $1000's in damage has occurred.
I doubt its a bad oil pump, have it diagnosed at a shop that does a lot of Ford repairs or the dealer. If it needs a pump, it needs more than a pump. 2 quarts is very low, dangerous low.
YES. just be sure to keep your oil level checked. the dye will show up under a black light and sometimes on engines that are dirty it helps diagnose where the leaks source is . Sounds like your mechanic is on top of the problem and trying to correctly diagnose it without selling you a bunch of repairs
I had a difficult coolant leak and was able to identify it by putting some flourescent dye (leak detection dye) into the radiator which glows under black light. You add the small bottle to the radioator, drive the car for a bit and inspect it later using a black light and you can trace the leak back to the exact location because it glows green or yellow under the UV light. Not all auto supply stores sell the stuff but you can get single dose bottles over the internet for very little (mine was about $9 locally). I had a similar problem with an oil leak which was also identified using an oil specific dye additive.
Until u have a mechanical test gauge hooked up to verify the oil pressure is ok assume it is not a good idea to drive, low oil press will destroy a $4000.00 engine very quickly.
