Question about 1993 Saturn SL2

Saturn '99 SL2 erratic tickover on idle

This has jst started happeing, the car seems to run fine for 15 minutes or so, then aw you stop the engine seems to become erratic ticking over from 2000 down to 500 rpm and nearly stalling.  The engine service light has been on for some time (i thought it was because i service my car at a non-saturn garage and they can't turn off the light).  And there also seems to be oil loss from around the valve cover on the right side of the engine by the back bank of the DOHC. Also we have been using a hell of a lot of oil recently.  Now i am not engine savvy.  But could the two be related?

Idle problem most likey a Coolant Temp sensor & connector.Cam covers very common to leak around the sides & down into the spark plug holes. Also all saturn s-series 1.9 engine consume oil. Most 1qt. per 1500 miles some more some less.Service Engine Lamp has nothing to do with regular maintenance. It's a malfunction indicator lamp.If it's on there is Trouble codes stored in the ECM.Auto zone free scan with printout.Hope that helps

99 saturn sl2 idles fine but stallsout when i give it gas

If previous to this issue you were seeing:

A) a rather noticeable rattling almost like a marble in a coffee can type sound

B) the engine running a bit warmer than usual after driving, say 210-225 or so, but not so much if it's only allowed to idle.

C) a check engine light, intermittent or not, reading an egr system code or maybe even something with the map sensor.

I would start to look at a plugged up exhaust system.

Outside of that you may wish to look into having your coils and/or ignition control module tested. Most parts stores will do it for free if you take them off the vehicle and bring it in.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

97 Saturn sl2. Won't start after it gets warm. If you drive it for 15-20 minutes and try to restart it will not engage the starter. Wait a couple hours and it will start fine

It is your engine coolant temp sensor (ECTS). 99.9%. the saturn made them with a plastic tip, so they crack over time. A replacement should be about 15 bucks and not too hard to replace. You'll notice your engine temp gauge not working (always cold).

I don't know much about cars, but here's what happens. When your car is cold, the fuel runs rich. Your broken sensor is always reading that the engine is cold, but when it is warm, it runs too rich and floods your engine, not allowing it to start. When your engine is actually cold, everything is fine.

Erratically will not start or even turn over. Sometimes will start but a few seconds later dies. Next day will start and run fine. 3 Saturn dealers and an independant mechanic unable to find a problem with...

Guessing there may be two issues. One might be "burning and arching" of the fuse box. My 1999 SL2 would periodically not even make a noise to turn over and that fixed that. It also had issues that some electrical components wouldn't work at the same time.

1992 Saturn SL2 stalls after running about 5 minutes

my only guess is a vacuum hose leak. possibly a loose air filter housing, or the mass air flow sensor. look for any hoses unplugged. if nothing is noticed, try cleaning out your fuel system. if that doesnt solve it, then it would be something an experienced mechanic would have to come and examine it personally.

1997 saturn sl2 key is in start position, no ignition, lights are fine

I had this problem with my 99 SL2, it was the starter. I checked for codes and there weren't any. Take your starter to a place like Auto Zone where they can test it. Most likely they will find that it is bad.

Engine shuts off when it gets warm

Try crank position sensor, it's common for those to stop working when they heat up
