The problem is a scraping (creaking) noise in the rear brakes after heavy braking.

I took a closer look at my rear disk and noticed a ridge (high spot) between the pad contact surface and the outside of the parking brake hub. The ridge has shiny spots that the brake pads (or maybe caliper?) is rubbing - hence the scraping noise. I'm concerned that this only happens after heavy braking... This is the part I really want to figure out.
Have you gotten anywhere with your problem?

Hi and thanks for your reply...

I replaced the pads a few months ago - nothing changed. You can't hear the scraping noise before heavy braking. It almost seems like the caliper moves after heavy braking and allows the pads to contact the ridge between the 'normal braking surface' of the rotor and the hub. I inspected the caliper and checked bolt torque etc, everything seems fine. Hyundai replaced the rear diff. a few years ago - could it be related to that?

I could probably just replace the rotors and that would fix the problem for now, but I'm uneasy with the 'floating caliper' thought.

I made a video showing the symptom of bad brake pads, what it looks like, and how to replace the rear brake pads and rotor.

First of all, scraping noise is never 'normal' with brake pads n rotors-- regarless of heavy braking. It seems your brake pads are worn out. Get them serviced if you don't have a brake lathe or know how to do it yourself.

Here's another possibility - Emergency brake shoes - inside the rotor drum. Try slowly applying the emergency brake to see if that has any effect on the noise. It might simply be rust/oxide inside the rotor drum.

the chances are your brake light switch is faulty.the cruise control relies on one side of the switch.
the epc light will come on for this code but will need to be reset through diagnostics port.
hope this helps.
you can also check for codes through the diag port for exact diagnostics.

Take/Tow your vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealership and pay the diagnostic fee... they will tell you exactly what the problem is and the cost of parts/labor to fix it... at least this way you'll know what the problem is and what's required to fix it.
