Question about 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Truck

5.9 L Dodge Cummins erratic shutdown. Over the past year I have noticed that the engine does not shutdown immediately when the ignition key is turned off. As time goes by there are longer periods between ignition turn off and engine shutdown.

The power supplied to the fuel pump, ignition coil, fuel injectors, and parts of the power module is controlled by the logic module through the Automatic Shutdown Relay (ASD); the idea is to shut off fuel pressure and the ignition systems when the key is turned off to prevent fires, dieseling, and other problems.

The ASD relay is closed (allowing power to flow through it) when the ignition is first turned on. If the signal from the ignition reference is lost while the engine is running, or if the turbo boost pressure reaches and exceeds the over boost cut-off point, the logic module cuts power to the ASD, which in turn removes power from the fuel pump, ignition coil, injectors and those parts of the power module. This causes the engine to shut down.

Failure of the automatic shutdown relay is often shown as inexplicable stalling or refusal to start.

When you start the van it is turn off immediately

It could be a second key that does not have a chip installed in the key. I have an extra key just to get into the van. This key will fit in the ignition and start the engine, but it will shut off immediately.

I have a 1995 dodge ram cummings 2500 truck. The truck will start, but when you turn the key switch, off the truck keeps running.

you probably have a stuck relay for the fuel shutdown. i had a 96 ram 2500 cummins that would do the exact opposite . the relays are on the firewall just above the engine and to the right ,kinda between the engine and the brake booster. it will be two relays mounted by themselves. you can unplug them and it should shut down.. i am no expert, but it took alot of trial and error for me to figure out my problem. if you follow the wires from them they will go down on the drivers side of the motor ,you will find a disconnect in this section of the harness. unplug it there.

Key is out of ignition switch, motor stops but cooling fan still running with whistling sound in my 1997 Dodge Caravan

Cooling fans running is okay. vehicles "superheat" during the time immediately after shutdown. With more aluminum in engine construction, major temp swings are problematic.

I presume that the fans eventually shut down...this is normal and very much needed.

Hello rjessop.
Here you are.
I think you are speaking of the maintenance light.

If it doesn't clear the first time you may need to repeat it.
  • 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start engine).
  • 2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
  • 3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Dodge cummins won't start, fuel reaching injector pump but no fuel coming out of injector pump.

You said you have fuel flowing from the inlet line of the injection pump? But not at the injector lines?

Check engine light

Whenever your check engine light is on your vehicle is in a limp mode. So you may notice extra fuel consumption. But you can run it for sometime with this light on without issue.........TPS stands for throttle position sensor. It tells the computer how far the throttle butterfly valve is open in the air intake of your truck.
Hope this helps!
