yea its a manual transmission and my park neutral switch had been disconnected when i got it and it wasn't connected so i reconnected it and tried the two wires hooked up both ways and they still wont work.

  • Trtala May 12, 2009

the piece that slides on over the shift linkage is it under the truck or in the dash bored or where at?

  • Anonymous May 23, 2009

the switch must b bad because it still doesn't work so i guess im gonna have to buy a neutral safety now and see if it works then

  • Curt Downs May 11, 2010

one of your posts says it's standard trans, the next says auto??? Which is it???

  • Curt Downs May 11, 2010

Manual transmissions have a back up light switch mounted on the transmission. Is your truck a standard trans, or auto?

  • dustang25 May 11, 2010

is this a manual transmission? i don't understand what you mean " you hooked them up both ways"

Ok i understand now the easiest thing for you to do is just get something to connect the two wires together,( like a short piece of wire ) bypassing the switch. have someone watch the reverse lights while you do this. if the lights come on then you need a switch. if not you have a bad wire or fuse/ fusible link. you can use a test light to see if you have power to the switch, one wire should have power and the other leads to the reverse lights. you can test the switch itself with a ohm meter, or continuity tester aswell if you have one. if you need more help i am here for you... dustang

the test i told you was for a manual trans. the automatic is different. manual trans has a switch that screws in, the auto has a piece that slides on over the shift linkage. you need to make sure you are messing with the right wires or you might start blowing fuses.

i have a diagram here for an 87, i don't know if they're the same or not. i will check my 89 book tomorrow, it is at the shop. according to the 87 the wire colors are purple/orange and black/pink. hope this helps you. the test can be done pretty much the same as i told you for the manual. on the 87 fuse #5 is the power for the reverse lights, but it also powers the turn signals so if they work the fuse is fine.

  • dustang25 May 13, 2009

i checked the 89 model diagram and it shows the same color wires.

  • dustang25 May 14, 2009

i would say that that wire you found cut is the most likely cause for your problem. the switch should be on the driver side of the transmission by the shift linkage. if you reconnect it you should have reverse lights unless the switch is bad.

Check all your fuses, then inspect the bulbs. If none are working you might have the ground for the tail light circuit out. Do the turn signals work? Hope this helps, if you need further assistance just reply to this thread/post.

On the side of your transmission will be a switch with several wires coming out of it. This is your reverse switch that turns on your reverse lights and most likely needs to be replaced

Reverse lights do not work on 96 ford explorer xlt

This car is an automatic transmission? If so I would suspect that a good cleaning underneath the shifter console would do a lot of good. Coffee, soda, debris, and time can all impede the proper function of the gear shift stalk position switch.
