an easy check to tell if it is the battery or alternator, is to remove the ground terminal from the battery while the engine is running, if the engine dies it is the alternatot

ford has a technical service bullitin out on this vehicle for the intake gaskets leaking causing a vacum leak that set codes 171 174. the solution is to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced . call your local ford dealer and see what thay can tell you about this bullitin.

Car slows to nothing

It's possible (= probably not) that the catalytic convertor has failed and debris is randomly clogging the muffler.

The next time it occurs, leave it idling and listen at the tailpipe of the exhaust system.
If you hear a pronounced hiss instead of the throbbing of the engine, the exhaust system is at fault.
