TPS faults and how to fix

1.3b) TPS Throttle Position Sensor faultsSymptoms of faulty TPS:
Associated OBD2 error codes DTCs: P0121 - P0123

  • Poor starting: The engine may start and then stall immediately.The engine may be encouraged to keep running by slowly pressing the accelerator pedal: pressing too quickly may again stall the engine.
  • Erratic/fast idling: The idle may be so erratic as to have some impact on the automatic gear shift characteristics and may actually prevent gear shifts. The engine idle speed may be increased above normal if the TPS fails to report that the throttle is closed. After the engine has been run at high speed the engine may take longer than is usual to return to idle as the ECU will not be able determine how quickly to shorten the injector cycles.
  • Engine hesitancy/ jump in revs: Engine may fail to respond quickly to the accelerator pedal input or may suddenly jump in revs inappropriate to pedal movement. When working properly the TPS should instantaneously signal the rapidly opened throttle position to the ECU. The speed of this signal is much quicker than any similar signal sent from Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor or MAF/IATequivalent. The ECU responds by increasing the fuel injection volumes to match the rapid increase in air volume. If the TPS fails to send the correct signals, the engine will seem to "hesitate" as the throttle is applied as the ECU looks to the other (slower) sensors to determine engine status. A sudden blip of the accelerator at idle can stall the engine (see above - poor start) as the ECU reacts too slowly to increase the injection time to match the sudden intake of air.
  • Engine Misfire: Spurious, beyond normal range, signals from the TPS causes the ECU to set inappropriate fuel injection cycles resulting in misfire.Detected misfire leads to a check engine light(CEL); mal-function indicator lamp (MIL). Cylinders with misfire events detected by the knock sensor may be shut down (disable specific injectors) by the ECU to prevent engine damage.

Note: - With the TPS disconnected the ECU depends on the slower signals it receives from the Mass Air Sensor (MAS) and/or the Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor along with feedback from the oxygen sensor to help regulate engine speed and fuel injection cycle.

How to check? The socket for electrical connection with the TPS has 3 pins, one for 'ground', one for 5 volts 'reference' and a third (generally the middle one) for 'signal' output. Back probe the signal pin in the connector to the TPS. Attach the positive lead of a voltmeter to the probe and measure the voltage output as the throttle plate is rotated. If working correctly the meter should show a voltage consistent with the throttle position from approximately 1 volt when closed and 5 volts when fully open. What is looked for is smooth voltage increase with throttle change.If there are drop outs in the throttle transition voltage signal or if there is no transition then the TPS is faulty.

How to fix? If the track is dirty causing drop outs, try cleaning it with residue-free electrical cleaningspray. If the track is worn it is perhaps easiest toreplace the complete device. In some instances it may be possible to adjust the location of the central mount of the TPS contact arm along the throttle shaft by a few millimeters and in the process cause a fresh concentric region of track to be used

Throttle Position Sensors on engines

1.3) TPS - Throttle Position Sensor

What is it? This is an electrical device that detects the position of the throttle plate.

Where is it located? The TPS is found on the exterior of the throttle body on the opposite end of the throttle shaft to the accelerator linkage arm. It usually consists of a small black plastic unit with an electrical connector attached to it.

How does it work? The TPS is a variable resistor madeup of an arc shaped carbon track with an applied voltage of 0 to 5 volts along its length and a sliding contact that picks up the voltage at any point along it. The device has three electrical connections, two provide the voltage range along the carbon track and the third (most often the middle connection) sends a voltage to the ECU in accord with the position of the sliding contact point on the arc. This siding contact arm is attached to the end of the throttle shaft. As the throttleshaft rotates, opening and closing the throttle plate, the sliding contact sweeps up and down the carbon track providing voltage readings to the ECU; 0 volts for closed to 5 volts for fully open.
When the engine is at idle the TPS output should signal the ECU that the throttle is closed (low volts) and therefore the ECU should either open the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or (on some engines) engage the idle speed control motor to maintain the engine idle speed. Sometimes a micro contact switch on the throttle body exterior associated with the throttle shaft is used to detect and confirm when the throttle plate is fully closed.

Gas pedal gets stuck and keeps the car going cant stop without turning the car off

dont drive it. find the cause and fix it now.
Hot and cold engine or BOTH>?
1995 Tracker, no tranny , no 4wd , on engine options stated.
Exact high RPM in neutral, not stated...... 1500 is normal cold.
keeps going in Neutral. (nah , you have 5 ways to stop any car.
key, hand brake, foot brake and neutral. and with 4wd, 1 more neutral.
keep that in mind driving any car.
this car has up to 3 throttle cables that can stick. and more!

1: floor mats hit the pedal>? ala. Toyota style (lawsuits)
2: the three cables are, throttle. , cruise and A/T transmission kick down cable. if car is M/T and no cruise it has 1 cable.
so disconnect it, throttle fixed? (disconn,. 1 by 1, bingo?

no cure?, then its not the pedal , you meant just high idle.
yes, replace the cable or bad parts three.
ok say its not the cables.. (tests proved that)
the 95 came with 2 engines, 8valves and 16valves,
they work differently (8v love so race, 16v loves to stall)

1: ISC Stuck open, common.
2: 8v, any air leaks at all , will cause super high idle speeds.
3: throttle valve in the throttle body is stuckopen (gunk) or the return spring broken (very very rare the latter,in fact never heard of one breaking)
4: IAC (thermal idle control stuck open ,(my 97 was). and lots more.
5: on the 16v it takes 2 failures. to make high idle.
gross rich running engine (cold engine its normal) and any air leak
once hot the engine can not race unless there is huge overfueling
and an air leak.
6: the 8v has this device on the side of the throttle body.
called a dash pot. its just a fast idle vacuum servo.
if stuck open the engine will scream full time....

we need to know which engine
8v or 16v first.
then does the idle race hot or cold or both (engine temperatures)
if it races , then how fast?, RPM the dash tachometer tells you that.

it can be as simple as a 50cent hose cracked.
to a dead ISC. (idle speed control) IAC is thermal idle air controller.
the IAC must be closed on a hot engine,
if the the engine never gets hot,it will scream full time.

P0508 = Idle Air Control System Circuit Low

Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) - Engine hard to start - Rough or erratic idle speed.

Dirty throttle body - Electric throttle control actuator misadjusted or damaged - Faulty Electric throttle control actuator - Intake air leak - Poor electrical connection to the Intake Air Control (IAC) valve.

If there are no intake leaks, clean throttle body, adjust engine idle and erase engine code. If the code comes back you may have to replaced the Electric Throttle Control Actuator (Motor) to repair the problem.

Air intake by engines - faults

1b) Air : leaks in air intake
Leaks in the air system can occur both before and after the throttle plate. In both cases the additional air entering is not measured by the air mass meter and causes the engine run unevenly. Engines with motor-driven idle control of the throttle plate may be able to accommodate minor air duct leaks. Hot engine restarts can be problematic if the air being drawn in is from the immediate surroundings of a very hot engine.All air ducting should be free of any leaks due to cracks or improperly fitted junctions.
Leaks after the throttle plate and into the inlet manifold severely compromise the ECU's ability to match the amount of injected fuel to the amount of 'measured' air supplied to the engine during 'closed cycle'.Although the ECU does its best to adapt and accommodate the change in air intake the engine remains rough and is less responsive to demand and often the Check engine light will become lit and codes such as P0171 (lean fuel mix) will be set. All vacuum lines should be thoroughly inspected for cracks, splits and loose fitting joints. This entails twisting the pipes to get an all-round look and feeling along the length of every less visible vacuum pipe. Many leaks can be isolated by disconnecting the vacuum lines in turn and temporarily plugging up both the attachment points and the tube ends and then monitoring the effect; a purge valve jammed open or a crack in the tubing on the EVAP system is very hard to detect other than by using this approach. Other points that may avoid easy leak detection, such as the junction between intake manifold and the cylinder head or around the injector body seals, can be tested by methodically spraying the suspect area with a fuel source (cigarette lighter fuel, alcohol, carburetor choke cleaner, propane gas, WD40 etc). A temporary surge in engine revs or perhaps stall, in response to the spray being sucked in and ignited, will confirm a suspected leak.
Engine characteristics in response to an air leak mimic the effects brought about by a faulty throttle position sensor or idle air control valve.All are related to the ECU being unable to maintain a normal ratio between the fuel dispensed and air available.
Possible leaks before the throttle plate:
  • · Air ducting connections
  • · Positive crankcase ventilation valve/crank case breather pipe/cam cover vent
  • · EVAP Fuel vapor evaporation control system that exits at the throttle body either at, or close to, the throttle plate

Possible leaks in the inlet manifold (after the throttle plate):
  • · Fuel pressure regulator valve
  • · Auto transmission in-gear hold
  • · Brake servo pipe
  • · Manifold absolute pressure sensor connection
  • · Exhaust gas recirculation valve
  • Ancillary vacuum line controlled systems

My 1988 Daihatsu Feroza is having some issues changing gears. when i take my foot off the accelerator and press the clutch in, it revs up about a grands worth, instead of the revs going down. this happened...

The issue is one of over-fast idling. First thing is to check coolant level in the engine. Make sure that the coolant is at the 'max' in the reservoir (1:1 mix of water : antifreeze). Low coolant would preve nt the ECU from detecting the car is at operational temperature. When the car is cold the ECU extends injection times to keep the car running but when warmed up the injection times are again shortened to reduce engine speed at idle. Also at idle, the Idle air control valve (IAC) on the throttle opens to allow air to by-pass the closed throttle plate. Check that as the engine gets warm that the coolant hoses to the throttle body become warm (showing that no blockage is preventing coolant circulation). Check that IAC air passage is clear and that valve can open freely. If the IAC coolant hoses are blocked or the valve is jammed open this would account for the very high idle speed. If everything looks OK check the PCV hose from the valve cover to the throttle and make sure that there are no blockages in it.

Hard to start running rich & stall

Sounds like a MAP inlet Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor fault. Symptoms of a faulty MAP

  • Poor starting/erratic idling/engine stall - with the MAP not sending the correct inlet air pressure signals to the ECU, incorrect fuel injection volumes then result. The imbalance in the fuel/air ratio often leads to rough engine performance and poor starting and stall. The engine might be kept running at start up by pumping the accelerator pedal
  • Sluggish performance/power ceiling - the engine may seem to perform normally in the lower rev range but will severely run out of power above about 3000 rpm
Poor fuel economy. The ECU tends to supply an over rich fuel mix to the engine in the absence of signal from the MAP resulting in very poor fuel economy. The reason for this is that if the MAP has no signal this ECU assumes 'no vacuum' = fully open throttle = engine is under load. To match this 'open throttle' signal the ECU increases the injection cycle to supply more fuel

How to Check? The MAP has three electrical pins, one for 12 volts (or 5 volts) reference, one for ground and the third (the middle one generally) is the 'signal' output. Put a voltmeter positive connector on the 'signal' pin of the connected socket (back probe by inserting a bit of wire). Apply suction to the vacuum input, even sucking on it with your mouth, should result in a measurable voltage output. At normal air pressure (open throttle) the voltage seen should be 0 volts. As vacuum is applied the voltage output should change to about 5 volts (throttle closed at idle). If no transition seen the MAP is faulty.

Saab 9-5 estate: Vehicle starts OK but stalls as soon as "drive" selected. Have to rev in Park then select drive to move off' Stalls again as car slows down to enter roundabout or approach unction....

Looks like a classic idle air control IAC problem. The ECU should normally enrich (prolong the injection cycle) if load is put on the engine such as engaging drive or putting input to the power steering. It can only do this if it knows that the throttle is fully closed according to signals from the throttle position sensor on the throttle shaft end (see the outside of the throttle body at opposite end to the rotary accelerator linkage). The ECU then allows air passed the closed throttle plate> This is doen by two possible ways 1) a motor in the TPS eases the throttle plate open just a fraction or 2) a port on the side wall in front of the throttle plate is connected via an opened IAC valve to an exit port. If it is the valve type, just ensure that everything is clean by using carb. choke spray or WD40 and cloth/brush to remove oily carbon build up. Ensure the valve can open and close freely. If the TPS motor type ensure that everything is very clean and that any micro switch associated with sending 'throttle closed' signal to the ECU is also clean and able to click freely. AS a final measure check all the vacuum lines to the inlet manifold for any leaks, ingress of un-metered air needs to be ruled out as another potential problem source.
