Leaking hose in between power steering pump and rack and pinion

Significant leaking of power steering fluid from the supply hose going from the power steering pump to the rack and pinion. i need to know how to take off the hose so i can have it fixed. it looks like it takes a specialized tool to remove it.

I agree with snowboard. Another name for the line wrench is "tubing wrench". It looks like a common boxed end wrench with six "points" or places of contact inside the boxed end but has a slot cut in it so it will slip over the metal tube part of the hose. Using this type of wrench you are less likely to "round off" the shoulders of the tubing nut. You won't be able to have the hose fixed. Well, you CAN, but it's much cheaper to buy a new one. I believe they're around $20.00 or so.
If the nut is recessed or some sort of wierd shape, try going to the dealership and talking to a mechanic. I've talked them into renting me a specialized tool. Some of the larger auto part supply stores also rent tools for a small fee. I think what you will need is the tubing wrench. Spend a few extra dollars and replace both hoses while you are getting greasy. That way you won't have to bother with it again for quite a while.

My power steering pump went out and I replaced it now its leaking somewhere else and it not the hose


Hello Jen, there are only a few places a power steering system can leak.
1, The pump itself
2. The feed hose
3. The return hose
4 The fluid reservoir
5. The reservoir hose(s)
6. The steering gear itself.
Now, its a simple job of elimination.
Do you have rack and pinion steering...there are several places a gear can leak also.
Please do some investigation. reply to me and we'll go from there.
I am considered a rack and pinion system expert.

Power steering fluid leak in 99 Toyota Corolla


look for split in the hard line where fluid is leaking. If you see split, change the line only. make sure power steering reservoir is filled and rack and pinion is full (charge with steering wheel left/right motion). You should be able to remove wheel and inside wheel panel to see power steering fluid shooting out of any hole. There is hydraulic pressure on the lines.

No, the power steering is entirely a separate and sealed system, wholly external to the engine. The power steering pump pushes the fluid through a high pressure hose into the rack and pinion-the steering gear mounted below and behind the engine-and holds pressure within the rack that enables power assisted steering. At the same end where the power steering fluid hose enters the gear will be a fitting for a return line back to the fluid reservoir. These two hoses are usually routed close together at least part of the way, some may even be held together with brackets. Leaks could develop at the pump, the fluid reservoir, or the two hoses to and from the rack and pinion, or the seals inside the rack and pinion may have failed. You should be able to find the leak-it will only leak to the outside-to check the rack and pinion for leaks, right where your tie rods come out of the gear and go to the wheels for steering, will be a small rubber boot encasing the tie rod and the end of the rack assembly-on both ends is a boot and a tie rod-peel back the rubber boot from the gear ass\'y, it should be dry. If a lot of fluid, the seals in the rack and pinion are gone. It will have to be replaced.
Hopefully you will find a leaking hose or fractured reservoir, but keep looking, air flow may be blowing the leaking fluid back and under the car. Good luck, hope it\'s not the rack and pinion.

Pretty old car there, Reginald, (that from a guy who drives a '79 Datsun!)
You'll have to get under there for a close inspection. Raise the car up on jack stands or blocks. Hopefully, a hose fitting may have loosened where it connects to the rack and pinion gear, and only needs tightening. Or a hose may have ruptured and will need replacing. There are two hoses from the pump to the rack, a supply line and a return line. If you see fluid on one, bend it back and forth to look for a break or leak.
The worst case would be a PS fluid seal failure inside the rack and pinion, requiring a new or rebuilt unit. Just paid $240 for a rebuilt unit for a Chrysler last year, to give you an idea.
If the fluid drips from where the rack and pinion steering gear is mounted on a crossmember right behind the engine, peel back the rubber boots on both ends of the rack gear (where your tie rods enter the rack and pinion) and check for fluid there. If a lot of fluid, the seals are bad. In that case, consider a used unit, or a rebuilt, or get used to no power steering. Good luck.

Power steering fluid leak on my 2000 ford explorer


Most likely the seals on either the pump or the rack and pinion. Could be a leaking hose between the two. Might be a loose or leaking hose connection at the pump or at the rack and pinion. If you lose the fluid in a short period of time it shouldn't be to hard to find the leak, and you are also smelling it burn when it hits the the exhaust pipes. Refill the system and with the engine running have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you look at the pump, lines, and at each end of the rack and pinion. you WILL find the leak.

The steering is hard to move and the steering warning light is on. Please let me know what to do I need to urgently resolve it.


The servo unit on the steering has failed . Look inside the engine bay for oil leaks - if none are present then the entire steering rack will have to be replaced - the internal seals have failed.

Does a 1997 grand gt 3.1 liter have rack & pinion steering? I'm told the power steering went out and I don't know if it might be the pump or what.


Your car does have rack and pinion steering. If all of the fluid leaked out somewhere and you continued to drive, you probably have 2 problems to repair:

1. What ever started leaking (return hose, rack, pressure hose, or could just be the pump itself)
2. Power steering pump was damaged from lack of lubrication (fluid)

I refill and it leaks out even if engine off. have to refill by 25 miles. cant find the leak but puddles are under car around pump area. cant figure if it is hose or pump. looked at picture of powercraft...


Well don't know exactly what vehicle you are working on but it is very possible that if is a car then the inner seals on the rack-n-pinion are worn out causing the fluid to leak out. If it is the rack seals leaking then you will need to replace the rack-n-pinion. Good luck.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape that is leaking power steering fluid. I replaced the power steering pump and hoses but it is still leaking. It only leaks when the Escape is turned off.


It might be the rack and pinion kit (seals)

I had this problem 2 months ago... replaced the powersteering pump 3 times until I convinced the mechanics to look at the rack and pinion. there they found the leak, especially when I turned the wheel.. They first kept telling me there was air in the lines and it would go away. but that never happened.

Power steering dont work to left or right


To find out witch it is,pump or rack and pinion,break loose the presure line on the power steering pump with a wench.Start the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth,you may need to loosen the nut on the power steering hose two or three turns to get the fluid to shoot out.It should come out pretty forceful.If it doesn`t,then replace the pump.If it does come out really powerful,replace the rack and pinion.
