Re: I'm need to remove the starter on a 1999 Sportage
YOU NEED TO BE A CONTORTIONIST TO DO THIS, BUT I JUST COMPLETED MINE LAST WEEK. THE BOLT THAT YOU CAN'T SEE WAS ONLY ACCESSABLE, (BLINDLY) BY USING A 3" EXTENSION WITH SOCKET ON. MANAGING TO GET THIS BETWEEN THE WIRING AND TRANNY I TWISTED MY HAND BACKWARD AND (BLINDLY) SHOVED THE SOCKET AND EXTENSION ON THE BOLT HEAD, THEN ATTATCHED THE RATCHET. NOT AS EASY AS I MADE THAT SOUND
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

at the right side of the vehicle under the battery there is the starter bolted by three screws you need to get under the vehicle to loose the screws use a 14mm socket and wrench to get the bolt loose it takes a bit of maneuvering to get it out of the tight space but it is possible and simply reverse to get the new one in remember to disconnect the battery and the lines to the starter before starting to work.
Disconnect the battery, and make sure the engine is cold when doing this because you will be working underneath the exhaust pipes. Using 8mm socket remove the bolts holding the small guard separating the starter from the exhaust. Using a 12mm socket remove the nut on the front (closest to you) part of the cylinoid on top of the starter. Using 14mm socket remove the two bolts holding the starter on to the engine. Take the old starter off, then place the new starter on and following these instructions in reverse order.
