2004 ford explorer won't start. The key in position "3" dashboard is on but the starter won't turn over (no starting noise). Before the problem occured have removed back windows and the battery went down. Tried to jump start did not work
I think the battery is trash, and you could have killed the silonoid on teh starter as well. use a volt meter to trace where your getting power oand if your gettting power to the starter, not the main power but the ignition wire on it.
if you are the starter is bad, if your getting pnly some power there the battery is mor likely the problem.
It is also so easy to kill these systems these days, if you jumped it and hit the battery the wrong way or shorted it out, could be more then just a starter n battery.
make sure you test teh igniton side of the starter when someone is trying to start it. the cheapest trick in the book is tap it with a hammer, sometimes they get stuck or froze when they are going bad, i have seen that work more time then not

What happens when you turn the key to start the vehicle ? Does the starter spin the engine ? Crank - no start condition ! Or does nothing happen when you turn the key to the start position ? NO - CRANK - NO START condition ! Two totally different diagnostic procedures.
So will not start how ?
Hello, What you are saying is the starter will turn if you jump the starter Relay. If you want to try this a second time, make sure the Ignition switch is in the RUN position. It should start.
Be sure to have the vehicle in Park. There are some Interlocks in the gearshift and Brake pedal that prevent when certain things happen. When your vehicle is in Park or Neutral, the power wire from the Ignition switch can make a connection to the wire that controls the starter Relay.
But first this wire has to get the okay from the Interlock switch, that the gearshift IS either in Park or Neutral. If this switch is bad or misaligned, the connection will not reach the starter Relay. You need to take off the small wire at the starter Relay and hook up a test light or meter. Then turn your Ignition key to START. The small wire should have power when the key is held in the start position.
If the small wire does not have power, then everything connected to that wire needs to be traced back to the Keyswitch. The cables or rods that move in the gearshift or steering column may be out of adjustment. Not too expensive to correct.
You have to start at the starter motor to do it yourself. You need a test light or a volt meter. You will have a big wire that should always have positive voltage at it on the starter solenoid, and...a smaller wire that gets positive voltage when the key is turned to start. If you have these, the starter motor is bad.
A FORD MACHANIC HAS TOLD ME THAT IN FACT THE KEY HAS TO BE RECODED. MY SITUATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME. HE SAID TO RECODE THE KEY I HAD TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE RUN POSITION, THE SECURITY LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL FLASH RAPIDLY AND CONTINUE TO FLASH FOR 15 MINUTES . WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN IMMEDIATLY BACK TO THE RUN POSITION FOR 15 MORE MINUTES. THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF AGAIN . WITHIN 5 MIN. I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN BACK TU RUNNING POSITION. 15 MINUTES LATER REPEAT STEPS AGAIN AND THE KEY WILL BE REPROGRAMMED, AND STSRT THE CAR. GOOD LUCK MY CONTACT IS A FORD MASTER MECHANIC.
