Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

95 ford windstar dies when i turn the steering wheel hard

Has happend 3 time, when i crank the wheel to the point that it squeals or whines to make a sharp slow turn, the car dies on me. No warning , no sound, just dead.

I took 5 minutes to restart the first time, started right up the second, but had to restart the car several times the third time. The car runs fine other then that. Upon taking the panal off to see the steering column better i did find the the steering wheel is NOT sitting in the bracket properly. Could that have something to do with it. I have a similar problem with the '96 Windstar. Stalls or won't start with the wheels turned. I have to straighten the wheels to restart the Van.

Windstar has a pressure switch on the pressuer line to the rack and pinion, squeeze the plug and pull up to disconect it and see if it happens again. you might have a short in one of these wires or the switch ... to reach the switch it is mounted on top of the power steering rack so reach down behind the motor on the driver side or crawl under and reach up on driver side

What would cause key won't turn, steering wheel locked, car in park, brake hard

It sounds like the steering lock has gone hard due to turning the wheel after key is out, turn the key and steering wheel at the same time and see if this releases the lock. Hope this helps

I have a 1999 ford windstar and it's power steering start to whine about a week ago don't under stand why add more fluids helps but then it starts again also can hear air when i'm going to park and turn...

Check your Power steering lines especially where they may clip to a plastic holder on the frame. Water and salt spray like to corrode the line at these points. Sometimes you may need to disconnect the line and take it off and test it for pressure holding capability.
Make sure you use the correct fluid for your Brand. Sometimes the vanes inside the pump wear, especially if it ran dry. Then the unit will need to be replaced.
Last, when steering pivots, like balljoints wear, they cause more drag making the unit to work harder to steer. The pump can squeal under the added resistance.

Help my 95 ford windstar alarm or horn starts when I am driving and take a curve. What could it be and is it expensive?

It sounds like the wiring between the horn button on the steering wheel and the dashboard is chafing. The insulation has been slowly rubbed off due to movement of the steering wheel. This is the only point between the moving parts (steering wheel) and non-moving parts (steering column). When the steering wheel is turned, the wiring contacts other metal and simulates the horn button being pressed.

It shouldn't be an expensive repair - but contacting your trusted local mechanic will remove any questions. If you do not have a regular mechanic, check with several to to make sure you're getting a fair cost estimate.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I had my transmission serviced today. Now my power steering pump is making noise.

no connectin between the 2 but check the fluid level. If it's a low tone whine as you turn the steering wheel, it could be air trapped in the system. Keep fluid level up and turn lock to lock several times to purge the air.

The power steering is making a whining sound, what

add power sterring fluid asap, and hope that it fixes it, otherwise time for a new power steering pump.

My power steering pump is making a "whining" noise. Why?

First check and make sure it is not low of fluid. If it is top it off with the correct fluid. If you let it get low it may have air in the system. After topping the reservoir off start the engine and turn the steering wheel fully to the left and right 5 times. This will remove any trapped air. If the whining is still there, you need a new power steering pump as it is defective.

Whining noise when i turn steering wheel

Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. Add to the full mark with the correct fluid as listed in your owner's manual. If you find that it is full then your power steering pump is failing and will need to be replaced.

03 Windstar makes a whining noise when idling and turning. Sounds like it is coming from steering column. Power steering fluid level is good.

When you checked the power steering fluid level were there any indications of excessive foaming? There are three things that would cause a whining noise from the power steering. 1- low fluid (you checked that so that is not the culprit), 2- loose steering drive belt (you should not be able to press down on the belt more that about one inch between the steering pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley), 3- power steering pump bearing worn out.

My 2003 Ford Windstar whines when turning the steering wheel.

The power steering pump has gone bad. Consider replacing it because if serviced it will still show this sign in a little while.

Good luck.
