Question about 2000 Volvo S40

1 Answer

Headlights light up about eight feet of pavement and no more.

I just bought a 2000 Volvo S40 and one of the problems is that the headlights allow me to see only about eight feet of pavement in front of my moving car. I'm unable to drive in the night time because of this. Is this a common problem or something I can fix at home? Thanks. --Estela

I have the same problem with my XC70. When I took it to the dealer the mechanic said that it was a common problem when the owner replaces the bulb incorrectly. He said "upside down". He was able to adjust the bulb and then no problem.

Unfortunately, now the other headlight bulb has burned out. And I am having a problem replacing it correctly.

I know that my input doesn't help you too much. However, I would attempt to replace the bulb in that light into a different position.

Just as my husband said he'd check the bulbs, my headlights went out
completely. I have to drive in the dark with my brights, which actually
look more like the regular lights. I'll pass the "upside down" bulb information on to him. Hawkins57, thanks for your input...we'll try to replace the headlight bulbs correctly.

There are height adjustment knobs on the back of the lamp housings you can use to adjust the height and aim of the lamps.

Due to the age of your vehicle, it is likely that they will break when you try to move them. This is very a common occurrence on S/V40 headlights; the lamps will need to be replaced if the adjusters break off, so be gentle.

How do you adjust the headlights on 2003 for F-150

Park the vehicle on level surface if it is possible 15 feet from nearest wall. Open the hood and there will be 2 or three screws on top of the headlight assembly. One will move headlight left or right one will move up or down . Turn your headlights (prefer to be a dusk) so you can adjust your headlights on low beam way to get half of the light on wall and half of the light down on the pavement or concrete..Give a test drive and if thet seem to be low or high readjust it again.

Headlights not working

First of all you need to check your bulbs? If the filament seems ok you new to work your way back up the loom, making sure there is no obvious damage. Secondly check your light fuse, this will be located in the engine bay fuse box or the cockpit, use your user manual to locate. If the fuse is ok, check visually and if possible with multi meter, I would suggest checking relay switch in engine bay. If this is ok then check your light switch/stalk.

Adjusting bi-xenon headlights on Volvo S40

This guys don't know what they are talking about. If you have self leveling head lights and they are way out of alignment, yes there is adjustment screws but those mess with a different light bulb (daytime running light) instead of the main bulb alignment.

So what is a man to do? go to the dealer and have them adjust them for you. Believe it or not everytime you get an aliment done you have to recalibrate your headlights because they change the way the vehicle sits. Do it enough times and the headlight will go out of wack (because of the self leveling function)

In other words, they headlights are adjusted by means of a Computer. You could do it your self but you have to buy the DICE VIDA adjustment tool and the proper software from Volvo. Not cheap, just go to the dealership.

I have a 2000 Volvo S40 and the left lowbeam does not go on unless I tap the fusebox, located right above the hood pop. I am wondering if the problem would be with fuse 10a, 15a or 20a? Or if not those...

Check the relay switch. It is a small square box about 1"x1"x1" and when you pull it out, has 4 or 5 terminals depending on the style. some are long rectangles. They are located either in the fuse box or in another box specifically for the relay. Or you can do a search on google for headlight relay location. Also, try wiggling the fuse or better yet relace it. there should be a separate fuse for the right and left headlights. I am betting on the fuse because the headlight relay should control both lights, whereas each light has its own fuse. Hope this helps.
