Question about 1992 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

1992 Jeep wrangler will not stay running

I know that I need to change the catalytic converter and had a power issue initially from the clogging. Since then It was running fine and no loss of power until one day it died.

Now, I cannot keep the jeep running, it spits, sputters and backfires.

I removed the air cleaner and noticed the backfire is coming from there. I thought the exhaust was clogged but when trying to keep the jeep running I felt exhaust coming out of the rear tailpipe. Nothing appears to be clogged at the moment. Any thoughts?

First, If the cat is bad, change it. Being plugged will mess with engine control systems that are responding to screwy readings because of that. Then go after anything else that's wrong!

when the cat gets clogged it will cause all kind of codes and problems, my 2004 TJ threw a transmission control module fault code and the power got worse and worse unitl it would not go above 3200 rpms. Make sure you swap all of the oxygen sensors out when you replace the cat (on the 2004 there are four of them).

SOURCE: What is causing my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Sounds like a timing problem, check timing and if off could be timing chain worn out especially if there is excessive miles(200,000 miles or more)

Have you had fuel pressure tested, and/or filter changed. Have you checked for plugged exhaust, such as catalytic converter? Quite often engine will also run a little hotter than normal when exhaust is plugged.

NO POWER, HAD A RANDOM MISFIRE AND REPLACED COIL PACK AND PLUGS. CHK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OUT FOR MIISFIRE, BUT VEHICLE FEELS AS THOUH CAT IS CLOGGED.

CAT would only get clogged if you were burning a lot of oil, is the tail pipe really black?
Run a compression check on the cylinders.
What condition were the plugs in when you removed them? They will help you trace the source of the problem. Local parts houses will run the diagnostics for you at their location if you can drive it there.

Replace 1995 jeep wrangler catalytic converter

If it has flanges on both ends, just unbolt it and replace. If it has welded pipes you will need to cut it off and use adapter sleeves and clamps. Really not rocket science...at worst, you may need to remove the hangars on the rear portion of the system to get enough room to install.

Check all your fuses make sure their good. Your fuel filter should be changed once a year. Or in worst case it might be your fuel pump. If it was a rough road it might have set off your emergency fuel shut off system. Check your owners manuel to find the lacation and reset button.
