Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Rear-end collision Chev Cav 2004

I was hit from behind and suffered severe rear-end damage to my Chev Cav 04 (only had liability insurance unfortunately).

Trunk, bumper, both back quarter panels damaged, can't tell you about the underside. Did not damage rear doors and back window is in tact. The car was in excellant shape, only 60k on engine, well maintained, new tires, no problems whatsoever, and clean. It was my elderly parents car, I'm a single woman with no knowledge of cars and would appreciate any ideas as to options.

I have pics if that would help. My questions are: If there is no frame(?) damage, is it worth fixing? And if not, is there a market for selling this vechical for parts and if so, how do I determine the asking price? The bluebook before the accident was 4600$.

Thanks ahead of time for any input!

    Hi Snorkelbobby,

    Thanks for replying.

It is drivable. Although the tire well is bent and rubs a regular size tire, I put the small spare on to get it home from the accident. There is also no gas leaks and the brakes work, however in MI it is illegal to drive without a bumper, I'm sure I could drive it to a shop without a problem.

Thanks for the website; I am going to ask someone to help me bump out and check the points. I appreciate your help and for pointing me in the right direction!

bang out the tire well with a big hammer and call a couple of small collision shops and tell ask them how much to install a used bumper. You can go to and look on the page with the asterisk and you will find the lowest cost bumper.

Are the bumper attachemnt points ok? If yes, a fiend could help install the bumper.

I live in MI too, so I know you have to have a bumper.

Is it drvieable? I would call a shop and pay a tech $50 to look at it and give you his/her opinion.

If gas tank intact, no leaks, tires pointed straight, brakes work - I would drive it.

If you are in the Detroit area, I could probably recommend a shop. Lots of salvage yards in the area. Probably can get bumper with color of your car. Good luck.

2004 Lesabre. Air ride shocks recently replaced. Recently hit in the right rear. Only $1K in damage (bumper cover, tail light). Got them to toss in a 4 wheel alignment. Car is at the shop now.

If it's a strut type shock, they make a cam bolt kit for it. If it's a regular shock type, they make shims that needs to be installed between backing plates and hub

Hi, just had rear end collision ( I did the rear ending), in my 03 Jeep Liberty 3.7l. Passenger side bumper vs hitch. Now trans is stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. It drives but hits 4K RPMs at 50mph.

I have seen this when the engine shifts in the engine bay. When an engine gets out of place the transmission linkage or cable is pulled short changing how the transmission will work.

2096 Honda Odyssey had rear end collision. I was parked and car hit left rear middle/rear pretty hard. had to replace the reinforcement beam, bumper. Lift gate etc. picked up the car and the check engine...

If the tailpipe got jammed in the wreck there is a chance that it damaged an O2 sensor lead. I would contact the insurance company and see if they can amend the estimate to cover the repair.

I was in a front end collision in my 2005 scion rear sway bar is making noise now...could this be from the accident? My insurance says no because its a unibody frame so the rear couldnot have been...

need to tell insurance company that you need to take it in and have it looked at, any accident will have unforeseen toll other parts of the car, just because it has a unibody frame does not mean that the rear end could not have been damaged in the accident

Could Rear end damage from a wreck cause my speedometer and gas gauges to stop working?

You must understand that collision stresses the ENTIRE vehicle. Just because it was hit from behind, does not mean that there is not collision damage in the front. I had a vehicle in my shop several years ago that was hit from the rear. The engine began knocking shortly after. It turned out that the collision had jarred the engine hard enough to cause the crankshaft to crack. This type of damage is extremely rare, but can happen. Trying to convince the insurance company that this was collision damage was a real trick.... On the other hand, fuel sending unit failures are quite common (without any collision) and can cause your fuel gauge to stop working.

The only way to determine if your problems are caused by the collision would be to first diagnose the problem. Only then can it be determined if the current failure is caused by collision or possibly caused by a more commonly known failure type.

Slight rear end collision has damaged back up sensors how do I trouble shoot the problem and how do I replace damaged sensors?

Sorry to hear about your collision. The sensors are mounted behind the bumper. If you look underneath you will see them and they should pop out i would start by making a visual inspection for obvious damged sensors and replace those.might have to pop them out and look closely start with ones that look like they took hardest hit. hope this helps let me know what you find and we can dig deeper if need to there is usually one or two that are obvious damaged

I had exactly that...a rear end collision. I

That could have been caused by the accedent since the suspension is desined to flex and is all mounted in rubber bushings. If the suspension flexed enough to bind the drive shaft it would cause damage to the drive shaft, but not cause any damage to the rubber mounted suspension components.

There is a good possibility that the rear end moved forward momentarily, taking with it the transmission tube, and pushing into the transmission housing, where it can do a lot of damage. When this happens, the two universal joints suffer as well, even to the point of one of them freezing.

What damages are caused from being rear ended

No the canister is in the front & this is probably unrelated to being hit. If the valve is bad it definately had nothing to do with it.

Yes, if it didn't do it before the accident but now it is then call your insurance co. and let them know it isn't fixed and the symptoms. It could be anything. A bent steering component, warped rim, etc.
