disconnect your MAF sensor and turn it on and see if it runs with out stalling. if it does, replace your MAF sensor, do not run your vehicle without it.

Idling eratic and bogs down when you try to accerate

Have you had the computer control module checked for system fault codes? Repair as ness. Any Autozone or Advance auto parts does this test for free, ask for an "OBD2" test. If no codes are present in the computers memory then have the fuel pressure tested, if that is ok then try cleaning the MAF (mass airflow) sensor, it is located in the air intake hose that goes from the air cleaner housing to the engine. Use a product designed to clean the sensor made by a company called "CRC" chemicals.

My 2003 Freelander is idling erratically when I start the car. When I push the gas pedal down nothing happens

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

There are two things that can result to this issue. It's a bad MAF (mass air flow) sensor or a failing TPS (throttle position sensor). If one of these sensors are faulty, an erratic idle or unresponsive throttle will be expected. As a first course of action, have it looked at and replace if necessary.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Hi and welcome to Fixya!

As a first course of action I strongly suggest that you take it in to any reputable mechanic and perform a valve clearance check. The clearance may be too far that's why it creates a noise. If that's the case then have a valve clearance adjustment.

You may want to replace the MAF (mass air flow) sensor too. If the MAF is faulty an erratic idle may occur and engine may stall. The MAF is located on the throttle body.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My car has eratic idle and acceleration jerking. It is a 2005 landrover freelander with 52,000 miles. Automatic transmission with a 2.5L engine.

It could be a few things. The EGR, IAC, TP sensor, vacuum leak, MAF sensor, air filter, bad ground to engine. Is the engine light on? If so were any codes retreived from it? What have you done or looked at so far?

Engine idling

Hi

The MAF code isn't really a problem, but the ETS is, because it is pointing to failure of the electronic throttle, which is a common problem, and a KNOWN problem at Volvo. The repair needs to be carried out at Volvo due to the need for a software upgrade after the repair, and it is this which is probably causing the bad idle rather than the MAF problem.

Now for the MAF problem....

Basically, the MAF is registering low air flow, and the main causes of this are:-

A dirty hotwire, which can be cleaned by removing the MAF and then spraying the hotwire with either brake cleaner or switch cleaner and then blowing it dry with your breath, but do not physically touch the wire, just blow on it gently. One good reason for a dirty MAF is the fitment of an aftermarket air filter of the type which requires spraying with oil. The oil contaminates the hotwire and causes this problem.

An intake air leak, such as a loose or split hose or vacuum line, a split diaphragm in one of the vacuum operated units such as the fuel pressure regulator, EGR valve, brake servo, etc, which could be located by sucking on the pipe connected to the unit. If you could **** air through the pipe without a vacuum build up then the unit diaphragm is split, or a leak at the intake manifold or throttle body.

If you were to spray carb spray around seams and joins in the intake system and the revs were to pick up slightly, then you would have found a leak.

If the hotwire was dirty, and becomes dirty again very quickly, then you should have the burn-off voltage checked out.

Obviously, it could be a wiring issue, but this is very rare, and 99% of the time, if a dirty hotwire or an air leak aren't the problem then a new MAF is the cure.

Very best regards

Geordie
