Unplug distributor! find #1 cylinder, take out spark plug, placr finger over spark plug hole, bump starter until compression blows finger from spark plug hole, align mark on harmonic balancer with 0 mark on timing cover. engine is on compression stroke.install distributor with rotor contact pointing toward #1 wire location on distributor cap. install plug. install wire. engine will start.

I did my cylinder head and put it back but my car is not starting i think i might have made wrong cam timing because its backfiring on the throttle its a volvo s40 2l engine need help fast

Did you remove the dist. while replacing the head if so you may have dropped the dist back in 1/2 tooth off on the timing and that would cause the engine to back fire. You need to bring #1 piston to the top of the cyl. and then make sure the rotor in the dist is pointing to #1 spark plug wire on the dist. cap and then drop the dist. You may need to turn the oil pump shaft to align the dist before dropping it onto the oil pump shaft. You can do that with a screw driver.

1997 350 Vortec engine. How do I line up everything to be able to change coil inside distributor?

Unless you have some experience with resetting a distributor you may not want to tackle this job. However, the way to do it is take the dist. cap off and place a mark on the dist. base and the firewall so after replacing the pickup coil you can align both marks to drop the dist in proper time for the engine. If the engine backfire once you have done this then the dist. is not in the right position or a half a tooth off. The idea is it should not backfire after the repair. You must also be sure the oil pump shaft in the engine is not moved during the time the dist. is being repaired. Hope this helps.

My 99 gmc 5.7 vortec got turned when the distributer was out now the oil pump shaft wont line up to put the distributer wont line up .. whats the best way to line everything back up and get the timin

If the Pontiac engine is similar to the small block Chevy, you have, I believe, a hexagonal shaft that runs from the end of the distributor shaft down to the oil pump. This is turned when the distributor shaft is turned by the meshing gears on the camshaft and distributor shaft. I would say that you are probably going to have to re-time the engine. Find TDC, then replace the distributor. It won't matter a whit to the oil pump if the gears are one or two teeth off, but it will matter a great deal if you distributor is not installed so it can be adjusted a few degrees when you get to "fine timing" the engine.

You should be able to download information on how to time the engine (finding TDC, etc.). Failing that, a trip to the library may be in order.

Please help i have a 1990 318i i need help on howto put valve timing and firing order rigth

order is 1-3-4-2

FIRST!! if you have an electric fan disconnect it cause they can kick on at any time and it'll be a nasty mess you'll have to clean up!!

make sure your car is at normal operating temp and your idle is correct,

make sure you car is in park (automatic) or neutral (stick) and the e-brake is ON!!!

the timing marks on this model are on the flywheel and you can see them through a timing check hole located in your bellhousing.

pull you vacuum advance hose off of your dist. (you dont have to plug it)

and attach your timing light to where ever you need to attach it to!

with your car off loosen the dist. just enough to where you can move it with your have but not loose enough to where it will move freely!!

on early models on the side of your distributor body there will be a set of #'s stamped there!

early 84' models have 0 237 002 080

late 84' and 85' models have 0 237 002 096

the early 84 has a symbol that looks like a upside down OT with that line through the middle!!

the later models have what looks like a Zo symbol but it'll kind of look like Z degrees!

if the marks are aligned correctly through the hole than it's fin but if they're not then you'll have to turn your dist. a little either way!!

when everything looks good tighten everything back up but make sure you double check everything you've done just to make sure it's gonna stay that way!!

Hi,my name is bobby,i have an 71 gto 455 ho motor,i put it into a 79 t/a.i changed it from points dist. to a havin a real hard time settin the timing, the book says set it at 12 degrees

Put the timing mark on the balancer at 0 degrees with the piston at top dead center. (piston at the top with both valves closed). Follow the #1 spark plug wire to the dist. cap and set the dist in so the rotor lines up with the the # 1 wire. Make sure the dist. is "seated" all the way. You might have to turn the engine a little to get it to seat fully. You set the timing with a light AFTER you start the engine. If you put the dist. in in the right spot you need only turn it very little either way to start the engine.

How do i set timing on 1998 chevy truck 350 vortec

number 1 plug wire should be pointing towards the front drivers corner . drivers side piston order is 1-3-5-7 front to back .passengers side front to back is 2-4-6-8 then the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 . if you pull the # 1 spark plug and put your finger in the hole /remover power wire while doing this at the dist.bump the engine when you feel a rush of air that's the compression stroke when the piston is at the top of it's compression stroke . pop the cap look to make sure the rotor is pointing at the # 1 piston roughly and place cap back on so the # 1 terminal is over the wire end of the rotor contact tip and work clockwise around with the firing order and hope this helps .if it still dont want to run then you may have jumped timing chain or stretched they will jump out of time and cause a headache.

Engine won't start

even if you have spark, it may not be "good spark"

Try cleaning the contacts to the coil, or replace the coil itself.

May have pinched or cut a wire by mistake during the work you have done. Check all for proper grounding as well
