Question about Lincoln Town Car
My 2003 Lincoln Towncar stalled and shut off last week on my way to work. I restarted it, and it runs fine, idles fine, but when I put it into gear, the engine shuts off. Restarts ok, but shuts down when put into drive. I have taken it to 3 repair shops and no one can determine the problem. Two of them said it's the transmission and the third doesn't think it's the trans., but thinks it's some kine of sensor malfunction, but can't figure out which one. He has had my car for 3 days now, and is still baffled. FYI, when I picked it up from the first dealer they pushed it out of the bay, and while they were pushing, I put it into drive to see what would happen, and it pulled find and ran fine for about a minute, then the engine shut down again. HELP.
My 95 lincoln towncar had same problem, nobody could figure it out. turned out to be the crankshaft sensor, not expensive(19.00) but had to drop the ac compressor to change it

Sounds as if the torque converter clutch is locked up or has an electrical short inside the transmission pan, or a chafed wire.

Engine stalls or RPM
fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.
This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
