The wheel half shaft is bolted onto the steering knuckle, which is what holds the caliper housing.

What is causing left front caliper to continually fail. Is it related to anti lock brake system?

The hose could be collapsed internally holding residual pressure and keping the pads applied. Also make sure that the caliper is sliding free side to side.

What size bolt holds the brake and caliper on a 99 Volkswagon Passat

For front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!!
For front brake pads. First you must verify yours front brake disc diameter: 280 mm or 288 mm. After that you can buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow:
1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose!
2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper.
3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease).
4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier.
5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston.
6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary!
7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing.
8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward).
9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier.
10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm.
11. Install both caps.
12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!

What tools are need for monte carlo front brake job

Hi: You'll Need a Floor Jack ,Jack Stands, To Keep it Safe ,Loosen Lug Nuts on Front Wheels Before You Jack it up. Then After Tires are Off, You'll need a 3/8 Inch Either a Allen L-Shaped Wrench or Even better and i Recommend you Use a 3/8 Inch Socket Type Allen Wrench,Using this you'll need a Ratchet to Fit the 3/8 Inch Socket Allen ,This Allen Socket is needed to Break Loose your Caliper Hold Down Bolts,There Located on Back Side of Caliper Theres On 2 of Them. Then You'll Rock the Caliper Back and Fort until it Comes out of the Caliper Bracket. If its Stubborn you Might Need to Use a Large Screw Driver to get Sme Leveage Under the Caliper to Get it Off.The You'll see the 2-Pads ,HERE Look and See which Pad goes in the Back Side Of Caliper and Which one to The Front Side.Normally the Pad With a Spring Like Tab Goes on The Inside And That Tab Fits into the Caliper Piston. Then you'll Need a Large C-Clamp To Compress the Caliper Piston Flush or Even With The Caliper Housing. You can Use 1 of the Old Pads To Tighten and Compress the Piston Back. The Old Pad you Use will be used on The Piston Side. As Far as Tools Thats Really ALL you'll Need. T\Let Me know How I Helped you By Voting on My Solution i Sent You. Thanks the WYOCWBOY

How to change front driver side brakes

Well, first of all if the drivers side need a brake change, common sense would lead you to do both sides then, also the pads are sold in pairs, you cant just buy the front left ones. You jack up the car, take off the wheel, remove the bolts holding on the caliper, pull it off, replace the pads, push in on the piston and reinstall the caliper/bolts/wheel etc. that's it

How do i replace front drivers side brake caliper?

Jack the van up, remove the tire. Then you will see the caliper. There will be 2 bolts that hold it on to the rotor. Remove the bolts and pry it off with a screw driver or what ever works. Then disconnect the break line from the caliper. After you get the new one use a c-clamp to press the piston down into the caliper and install the brake pads. Bolt the caliper back into place and install the line. Loosen up the bleed valve on the caliper 1/2 turn and have someone pump the breaks until no air bubbles come out. Once you have a smooth stream of brake fluid coming out the valve have that person pump once more and hold the pedal all the way to the floor. Then tighten the valve.
