Won't shift 1995 subaru impreza wagon won't shift out of park

I am not sure what year they started using shift interlock but I think it was before that, so the brake must be depressed before it can be shifted. When you step on brake you should hear a faint click and since it is an electrical switch it must have power.

The 95 definately has a BTIS (brake transmission interlock solenoid) It is probably burnt out and not allowing the lever to move out of the way of the shifter. They can be pretty pricy to replace, fortunately you can get the solenoid seperate and not have tobuy the whole shifter. For the time being you can release the shifter by removing a small tab found on the shifter bezel. once you remove this small tab you will be able to fit your key into it and manually release the shifter. Subaru put this for emergency situations, like a dead battery and the tow truck driver needs to get your car into nuetral. You should be able to find detailed instructions in the owners manual under emergency

SOURCE: subaru impreza automatic transmission won t shift

Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

SOURCE: I have a 1995 subaru impreza. I cant get the

There is a locking solenoid under the plastic shroud around you shifter. When you put on your brake the solenoid is supposed to pull back to release the shifter.
The buzzing you are hearing is that solenoid trying to pull back. Going to have to replace it.

I'd check under the drivers or passengers seat - That is where alot of the entry and security controllers are located - If not, you'll need to consult a "component locator" which will tell you exactally where it is...
