Question about 2005 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Wont shift out of park unless I stick a screw driver in a small hole above gear shifter.

2005 Nissan Altima, Car didnt shift properly out of park. After calling the dealership they had me remove a small plug just above the gear shifter and stick a long narrow screw driver in the hole to release the shifter (brake solenoid?). This resolved the problem for a bit, but now its back (random). Do I need to change out the brake solenoid and if so, how do I remove the center council without damaging? THANKS!

I attempted to remove the console by removing all the screws I could see. It appears to be in two pieces and I am afraid to force the two apart for fear of breaking plastic parts. Also, will I need to get the console above the gear shifter knob? THANKS!

I have the same problem with the gear shifter. I also notice the dome and map lights are out. I checked the fuses and do not find any burnt. Does anyone know if the light problem and gear shifter problem come from the same source?

You must remove the console yes, and you need to replace the shift lock solenoid.

It is much easier to have the console completely out of your way. Also there are many screws in hidden spots. for example under the glove box lid. pop the little trim pieces off of everything on the center console. also under the little square rubber stops for the glove box.

if the car does not shift out of park, check all your fuses first, try checking the brake fuse first, when you step on the brake pedal it releases the shifter, if it doesnt shift into the gears you most likely blew a fuse

The shifting gear locks, like inside the console. the only way I can change the gears is when i stick a pin into a small hole located on the top left of the console.

Either your brake light fuse, brake switch or shift lock solenoid is bad. Any one of those being bad will keep the shifter locked. Have them checked out.

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.

Floor shifter dosent want to come out of park

do your brake lights come on? if not then you have a bad brake light switch, it also controls the release for the shifter. if they do work then the problem may be in the shifter itself. there is a small cover piece near the shifter that says 'shift lock', use a small flat screw driver to pop open then push screwdriver straight down into the hole to release shifter.

Gear shift stuck

I am having the same problem with my 05 Altima. For a temporary rememdy we took stuck a key down into the release hole in front of the gear shift. There may be a little cover over the hole, but if you take it off and stick something in it, it will release the shifter.

Cant get key out

I have a 2006 HHR and with a floor shifter this is the problem. There is a pin that goes thru the shift cable that is falling out. Above the window buttons pry the little plastic holder out remove the 2 screws take the plastic off of the sides of the console you will see a black plastic frame with holes in it I cut a larger hole between 2 of the small holes with a hack saw on the driver side. Put the car in neutral drivers seat all the way back pull on the shift button and you will see the pin pull it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. I put 598 black loctite sealant on mine and reinstall. Shift back to park if you can get the key out and the doors unlock you have the pin in the right spot and it is making both switches when in park. You can see if it is on the switches by looking thru the hole where the little holder came out. The pin sticks out about a 1/2" on each side. If you don't have timre to do the above my car has a small square plastic access panel under the steering colunm pop it off and push a release and get the key turned off your book will walk you thru this it is like they knew this problem would occur Good luck
