Question about 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe

1 Answer

Braking issues I have a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. The other day I hit a pothole when I applied the brakes and now I'm having braking issues. Now there is virtually no pressure to apply the brakes and you have to push it almost completely to the floor to get the car to stop. If you push it 1 millimeter further the wheels lock up. There was some fluid on the ground, but there wasn't a wet spot this morning when I looked. There was just a dry spot from the other day. The car does have anti lock brakes.

I ended up taking it to a garage. Some how, and he couldn't explain how it happened, but something electrical shorted out the master cylinder and boiled the brake fluid. Replaced MS and fluid. Tested fine afterwards with no more problems.

Chevrolet avalanche service stabilitrak and traction control service came on

Did it stay on or just flash a second? Anything the interferes with correct wheel rotation can trip this warning. Did you change tires, have brakes serviced or hit a pothole real hard? Believe it or not even a weak battery can cause warnings of this type due to voltage fluctuations. There are sensors in you wheels that monitor rotation speed, braking and position. It sends this information to the cars computer so that it can control speed of engine and braking to prevent skids , wheel hop, and help keep the vehicle under control.

Pulls to the right when you brake or down shift

When a vehicle pulls one way while braking, it is typically a brake problem. Calipers locking, or sticking, etc. If its occurring while downshifting, then it could still be a braking problem, or alignment. If you can check the brakes after a short drive for heat, if one side is considerably hotter than the other, then you have an issue w. the caliper/drum setup.

Tcs light comes on when i hit a pothole

TCS is short for Traction Control System. When you hit a pothole, one wheel (or more) may be off the ground (spinning at a different rate) for a short period of time. This is a normal course of action for the car's computer: Notify the driver that the TCS is operating and apply braking as needed to the faster wheel(s).
