Question about 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

My engine light came on, then started blinking. I

My engine light came on, then started blinking. I ran an OnStar diagnostic and was told there was a problem with the fuel delivery system. I was out of town and towing a boat, so getting towed in wasn't an option. I limped to the nearest dealership (only a couple of miles away)and dropped it off since it was after hours. The guy called the next morning and told me that there was trash clogging the fuel injectors. I was going to have to have 4 injectors replaced, plus he was going to have to pull the gas tank, flush it and replace a filter that was in the tank. Total cost: $1500!!!! I questioned why the filter would be inside the tank, and if there was a filter in the tank, how did trash get to my injectors. He told me it was probably corrosion in the fuel line and that I was supposed to have the tank pulled every 25,000 miles and have the filter replaced. (Are you kidding!!!) It was my understanding the fuel line was stainless steel. He said there were no in line filters on the 2004 Silvarado's.

Of course this occurs at 65,000 miles just weeks after my warranty expired. Am I getting ripped off?

Depends, injectors can be cleaned for far less than replaced. I had the same thing happen in my Dodge truck all 8 injectors pulled cleaned replaced. Gave me the same song and dance about tank, ended up not doing tank and just having a large (from a marine store) in-line filter installed. Have had no further problems 60,000 miles later still going strong and haven't had to replace the filter. The injector cleaning was $35.00 each plus about $10.00 each for them to remove and replace. The filter cost just under $200.00 and they charged me $150.00 to install, With everything I was out the door for around $800.00.

There was an error in the 2004 Owners Manual Section 6 under Normal Maintenance Replacement Parts.
This section lists the fuel filter as a replaceable part; this is incorrect as gas powered V-8 engines have a lifetime filter built into the fuel sender inside the tank and thus the fuel filter is not serviceable separately on 2004 Silverado trucks equipped with the 4.8 5.3 6.0 8.1 engines.

I fuel pump has an expectancy of 110,000 miles before failure. If you keep the fuel above 1/2 tank most of the time you may get more miles out of the fuel pump.
There is no cooling fan to keep the fuel pump cool except the returned fuel. If you have bad or dirty injector, there should be more codes, line a run lean or rich DTC codes with misfires due to the wrong air fuel mix ratio.
Ask for a DTC read out and see what the reason is to why your Silverado is running the way it is.
Good luck and hope this helps, here is a link to DTC codes http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/

I have a 92 toyota pickup with the 3.0 v6 in it and the check engine light is on constantly. I was told that I could use a paper clip to tell me the codes, but i'm not sure which wires to jump. Anyone...

Locate the diagnostic check connector under the hood, it's near the right front fender close to a fuse box and it says "diagnostic" on it, open the cover, there is a terminal diagram inside it, put a jumper wire between the terminals TE1 and E1, turn the key on, the engine light will start blinking, if there is a trouble code the light will blink a two digit code number, for example a code 25 would be two blinks followed by five and so on, there may be more than one code, let them repeat a few times to get the correct information.

It sounds like the engine is misfiring. Get the code read at local shop or auto store. It should tell you which cylinder is misfiring then you can begin diagnosing the problem on that cylinder, whether it be a spark plug, coil, fuel injector, or you could have lean codes in which case you will have either a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure. Without the diagnostic trouble code it is hard to tell what is going on.

Service engine soon light staying on

The "check engine" light is part of your car's so-called onboard diagnostics (OBD) system.

If the check-engine light comes on, here are some tips on what you should do:
  • Look for a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Check your dashboard gauges and lights for indications of low oil pressure or overheating. These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine as soon as you can find a safe place to do so. On some cars, a yellow "check engine" means investigate the problem, while a red "check engine" means stop right now.
  • Try tightening your gas cap. This often solves the problem. Keep in mind that it may take several trips before the light resets. Some vehicles have a separate indicator that warns of a loose gas cap before the condition sets off the "check engine" light.
  • Reduce speed and load. If the "check engine" light is blinking or you notice any serious performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduce your speed and try to reduce the load on the engine. For example, it would be a good idea to stop towing a trailer. Have the car checked as soon as possible to prevent expensive damage.
  • Contact OnStar, if available. If you have a 1997 or later General Motors vehicle equipped with OnStar and an active OnStar subscription, contact an advisor who can read the trouble code remotely and advise you about what to do.
  • Have the code read and the problem fixed. If you want to diagnose the malfunction yourself, you can buy a scan tool at most auto parts stores. Prices range from about $40 to several hundred, depending on the model and the features. The tools come with instructions on how to hook them up and decipher the codes. But unless you have a good knowledge of automotive diagnostics, you're probably better off taking the vehicle to a professional. Some automotive parts stores will read and interpret the code for you without charge. Unless there is an easy fix, they may simply refer you to a mechanic.
  • Don't go for a state emissions test. In a late-model car, an illuminated "check engine" light probably is a sure sign your car will fail the test. In some states, it's an automatic failure, even if the problem was nothing more than a loose gas cap. By the way, don't bother trying to fool the inspection station by disconnecting the battery or using any other method to erase the trouble code and turn off the "check engine" light. Your vehicle's computer will let the inspection station know that its codes have been erased, and you'll just have to go back again.

Hope helps.

98 taurus started ran a bit then died now wont start

If that is your only transportation you need to call other repair shops. Find out about towing fees and what diagnostic fees they have.

Before there were diagnostic scanners, there were Mechanics. Scanners come in all types and some will suggest possible solutions and others are tools which Mechanics use to find problems.

For instance, you are told you have fuel pressure. You are told they installed new spark-plugs. You were not told if the spark-plugs are getting electricity to fire. You were not told if the fuel injectors are getting electricity to allow gas to reach the cylinders. You can have fuel pressure but the fuel injectors must open to put gas into the engine.

A noid tester or plain testing light will show if the injectors are opening. A spray of starting fluid will also indicate if the engine is not getting fuel despite fuel pressure. It will try to run with starting fluid if it has spark.

When you find out whether it runs, if not, then check for spark if the starting fluid does not make a difference.

It is questionable whether new spark plugs were needed if installing them had no effect. Check other service places.

Service Engine Soon Light on a 2004 Trail Blazer

VERY SIMPLE
1. Turn key to the "on" position but don't start car
2. Pull the PCM BAT and PCM IGN fuses in engine compartment
3. Wait approximately 5 minutes
4. Turn ignition off
5. Replace fuses
6. Start the car and the make sure the light has went off.
then check to see if your gas cap is on right. If this light comes on again then it is time for the dealer. If you can't find them fuses then just disconnect the battery for five minutes reconnect the battery and when you start the truck the light should be out. just let it idle for 2 minutes with no heater or radio on. and you set. I hope this helps you.
