Question about 1999 Ford Windstar

This van is a lemon. The transmission can't handle the power of the engine and the excessive weight of the vehicle. Ford put a van body on the guts of a ford taurus and guess what? it doesn't work! Don't buy this vehicle it will go through tires, gas, transmissions and intake manifolds like there is no tomorrow. The check engine light will come on and never truly stay off! The steering and engine are also prone to problems.

I would say you have a faulty speed sensor if the trans isn't seeing the correct speed overdrive will not work.check the codes it should lead you in the right direction.

Lack of power in 5th and 6th gear at cruising speed, have to downshift and go through gears to obtain higher speed

4th and 5th gears are for use over 45 and 55mph respectively as they are both Overdrive Gears.

If you are above these speeds in these gears when the issue occurs I would suspect Tune-up issues, fuel/air delivery problems, or a drastic change in tire/ wheel size on the vehicle.

Last tune up was?
Air Filter?
Fuel filter?
Checked fuel pressure and volume?

Blinking d4 light with intermittent speedometer

Usually it means the speed sensor in the transmission is failing.
The blinking light means your overdrive may not work.

My 1996 ford van speedometer is not working and my overdrive light is blinking?

Could be a problem with the cluster in the dash or the wiring from the speed sensor to the computer.

Sppeedometer works intermittantly

If the vehicle speed sensor was the cause you would have a check engine light and the transmission would have sifting issues into overdrive, I would think you just have a failing tachometer stepper motor (tiny DC motor) that drives the needle..

Transmission seems to slip slightly when transitioning into overdrive. Feels like a 'fish bite'. No 'service engine light' on, no misfire of any cylinders, no codes found. All other gears work smoothly...

I am surprised the AAMCO techs have no ideas about this. This "slipping" could be caused by the overdrive system having a mechanical problem (e.g. sticking solenoid, leaking seal) when trying to engage or disengage.
The overdrive solenoid locks the torque converter when activated, and releases when deactivated, both starting to happen when the vehicle is above about 40 mph and depending on what the vehicle is doing at the time (accelerating, decelerating or coasting). When you depress the accelerator and the solenoid is engaged at close to this speed, it should immediately release, and then re-engage when you stop accelerating, and you should immediately feel a light "bump" each time, not a "fish bite".

Lost speedometer and overdrive light flashing

Its most likely the vehicle speed sensor. Its on the transmission near the output shaft on the passenger side. Check the connection first, if it's good, change the sensor.

No speedometer, overdrive flashing, will not shift to low.

sounds like the speed sensor on the back of your tranmission housing has gone out or is starting to. i would visit ur local tranny shop n have it checked out also when the overdrive light is flashing usually means there is any issue with drive n overdrive but can also be included with just the speed sensor issue

Speed sensor and overdrive

OVERDRIVE ENGAGEMENT IS TIED TO THE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL, THE SYSTEM WILL NOT GO INTO OD UNTIL THE CAR REACHES A CERTAIN SPEED, IN MOST CASES AROUND 35-40 MPH, THE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL TELLS THE ECU WHEN THE CORRECT SPEED HAS BEEN REACHED.
