Question about Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

I need to change a water pump on a 1996 Hyundai Lantra and I was wondering if I can do it without taking the engine out. While I'm doing the water pump I might as well replace the timing belt as well but would need to know how to align the timing and if there are any other replacement recommendations (seals etc) while I'm doing the job.

Hi Steve-e-t-t,

The water pump is located directly behind the pulleys near the center of the timing covers. You'll need to remove the timing belt to get the water pump out. Once you've got the timing belt and pulleys off, you can pretty much unbolt and remove the water pump.

The steps to remove timing belt alongwith the diagram is explained below :-

97 Hyundai Lantra. Temp gauge shows engine very hot

If the replacement thermostat is good, and installed properly, then the temp sensor might be bad. I hate to tell you ($$$$$) but waterpump could be bad (more expensive)

Engine high rev at stop and slowly goes to idle speed.

I've got Hyundai Lantra 1.6 year 2000. It's take time to start when it's hot. When I start my car it revs at about 2k-3k rpm. It also does it when I come to a stop. When I come to a stop it will stay at a higher rpm than that of idle speed. It drives ok when on freeway but uses more petrol. I have changed the water & petrol pump but no luck
