I need to know how to remove the inner tie rod on the passenger side of a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I took the outer TR off, slid the boot up to where I can see where the outer TR connects to the rack but I cannot use the inner tie rod removal tool to get it off. There is a flat smooth metal around where the TR tool would grip to spin. Can anyone help me?

The inner tie rod should have 2 flat spots where the tool goes onto,then the rest is smooth sometimes very hard too see in there.,the 2flat spots are on the back side close too the rack sometimes you need too put the wrench part of the tool on first then put the outer part of thhe tool onto the other piece .an octopuss would be helpfull with all his arms

disconnect it from the outer tie rod, remove the boot from the steering rack , you will need a special tool to get at the inner rod cap, remove and install new , then get the car aligned, not an easy job and hard to get at
Yes degreaser will not hurt it. The outer tie rod is retained only by one nut that connects it to the inner tie rod.Once you have this loosen just turn the outer tie rod to the left to remove it from the inner tie rod.
first take the outer tierod off of the spindle tthen take the boot loose from the rack and try to break the inner tie rod loose make sure when replacing the inner tierod that you count number of times you turn it wel unscrewing the outer tie rid you will need to get a alinment perform after you replace that tierod.
If you have electric steering(no power steering pump)you have to change the entire steering gear assembly as no part is available.If you have the system with a pump a part is available.In order to change the inner tie rod you would loosen the 21mm lock nut on the tie rod.remove the 18mm nut on the outer tie rod and spin off after removing the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.Remove the nut and the inner and outer clamps on the tie rod boot.remove the boot.You would then need a special inner tie rod tool to turn the threaded inner rod from the steering gear.
it is the one connected to rack and pinion. there are two types inner and outer tie rods. Inner tie rod is The one connected closest to rack and pinion. Outer tie rod is the one connected to steering knuckle.
I used this website: http://www.allpar.com/fix/intrepid-steering.html It worked perfectly. To add to it, I used a tie rod puller tool rented from Oreilly Auto Parts for only a few bucks, to press the old bushing out of the inner-tie-rod end. Worked very well. Easier than removing the entire tie rod, and hammering it out. However, removing the entire tie rod would make re-assembly easier. If I did it again, I would strongly consider removing the driver side tie rod from the car, then attaching the inner tie rod end 1st. Meaning, attach the passenger side inner tie rod 1st, then the driver side inner tie rod with new bushing, then re-attach the drivers side outer tie rod. That would probably be the easiest way on this 1996 dodge concorde, due to the fuel line that's in the way....
There is a tool that you can use that will make it easier for you. To get to the tie rod end, remove the wheel and take the outer tie rod end loose from the hub. You will have to use a hammer and hit the socket where the end goes into the hub to free it up. Once you have the tie rod loose from the hub, loosen the nut behind the outer tie rod end. Count the revolutions as you unscrew the outer end off and write te number down so you will know how far to put it back on. This will save your alignment. Now, the end that is still there is your inner tie rod end. You will have to undo the bellows boot to get to the nut. The tool will slide over the end and secure onto the nut. Now you just unscrew this and replace with you new inner tie rod end.

If you are talking about the ball joint on the tie rod then you must use a spreader to seperate the two.
These are sold at your local auto parts store. When unthreading the rods make sure to count the number of turns out and turn the new one back in the same number of turns. Then take the vehicle to be aligned. The money saved doing the job yourself will be wasted on excessive tire wear unless you do.
Also keep in mind one side of the tie rod is left hand thread and the other right hand thread.
