Question about 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Backup lights not working

I have a 2001 vw Jetta TDI w/ manual transmission. Both backup lights are out. All other lights are fine. I determined with a continuity tester that no electricity is getting to the light. I've heard that the sensor at the shifter can wear out or get dirty and cause the problem, but I'd like to get a more expert opinion before I start tearing into that. Recommendations? If the shifter is the right place to start, what should I look for? Thanks

There is a connector on the top of the manual transmission. It is close to the battery box. It should face forward, meaning you can detach the connector from the (reverse) sensor by pulling the connector towards the front of the car. A possible issue is that this connector has gotten dirty or is not making a good connection. Check out this connector first to see if it looks clean and in good shape. The connector only has 2 electrical connections, kind of like small spade terminals in the connector. Make sure they are clean and making good connection with the sensor on the top of the tranny.

It's also possible to remove the reverse sensor from the transmission. It's in a cylindrical black plastic housing tha covers the portion of the shift linkage that actually enters the transmission. The sensor itself is pretty rugged, but it's possible that this black plastic housing has come loose or dislodged.

2001 vw jetta changing trans oil

Your 2001 VW Jetta is likely equipped with a "sealed" transmission unit. There is no dipstick that you can use to measure the level of transmission fluid in sealed transmissions. Unfortunately, it's a dealer item that needs to be addressed by a qualified mechanic or at a VW dealer.

My2001 vw jetta manual transmission wont come out of 3rd gear and i dont know why

Does the shifter feel loose? Does it drive in neutral or does it lock in two gears if you select a different gear? I'm trying to determine if it is a transmission problem or a shifter problem. It is likely a shifter problem.

Does my 2001 Jetta TDI have to use a special type of transmission oil or fluid?

Automatic or manual? They use normal fluids, unlike Audi's (powersteering) where some needed the synthetic green stuff or else the seals would go. There are really good synthetic fluids available that are much better and last longer. Check out the VWvortex forum for lots of great VW info.

Cheers,
