    You can get error codes readout. Many auto parts stores will loan a meter to do. And of course for any purchase of a used vehicle always have a trusted mechanic inspect it before purchase. Then change;

    Oil and all fluids,

    plugs, cap, rotor, cables,

    all filters, (oil air, gas, etc)

Take it to an Autozone or O'Reillys and they will test the computer for you. It should have set a code, but you don't know if the code light works so its your best bet. Sounds like it is running rich and the crankshaft module is not advancing the timing.

Black smoke could indicate blow by in a cylinder or the valves might not be closing properly. Start with a compression test.

Does the engine have a miss at any time and what type of smoke does it blow (black all the time) while you are running.. Have you a turbo on the engine.
Check the exhaust and the best way is to take it off at the manifold and see if it makes any differance ,, and let me know ASAP RON

2004 DODGE Ram 1500 4.7 truck runs rough black smoke, low vacuum

Search for vacuum leaks. Could be your head gasket, or oil rings. Black smoke = oil is being burned. Which would mean that either your oil rings are worn out (for whatever reason, since your truck is fairly new) or that you have a head gasket problem.
