Question about 2001 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

WON'T START I HAVE A 2001 PONTIAC SUNFIRE. THE SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER STARTED TO GO OUT BUT THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING. WE STOPPED DRIVING IT BUT STILL STARTED IT EVERY DAY. THE DAY BEFORE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO TO THE MECHANIC, THE CAR WOULDN'T START. THE BATTERY TESTED WEAK, SO WE CLEANED THE CONNECTERS AND TRIED TO JUMP IT. NO LUCK. WE THEN PUT ANOTHER BATTERY IN, STILL NO LUCK. IT TURNS OVER, BUT IT SEEMS A BIT SLOWER. WE CAN ALSO STILL HEAR THE FUEL PUMP. ANY IDEAS?

It may be that the tensioner has finally seized up...to check this take the serpintine belt off and see if the tension pulley is seized up..if it is your engine is trying to crank but the friction from the pulley is preventing it form turning over fast enough to fire up

Can I bypass the ac compressor on my 2001 Pontiac Sunfire when replacing the serpentine belt?

We had a car that we had to bypass the compressor but my mechanic said we could not do it so he disconnected all the lines on the compressor and hooked it up that way. No we did not have air conditioning but we drove the car that way for several years after that.

Tension pulley seized

If your tension pulley is seized you can do one of 2 things, replace the idler wheel on the tensioner or the whole tensioner assembly as a complete unit, sometimes sand and dirt bind up the tensioner inside and if not taken care of will ruin the bearings on other devices using the serpentine belt. If your belt is running over a frozen pulley, you need a new belt also. Check all your other accessories for damage while the belt is off.

How do i change the timing chain

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a ratchet and socket, read the serpentine belt routing diagram located under the hood, then release the serpentine belt tensioner using a ratchet and socket, and carefully remove the serpentine belt from all of the pulleys with your hands. 2 Install the new belt according the routing diagram, then ease the belt onto the belt tensioner pulley and tighten the tensioner with a ratchet and socket.3 Reconnect the battery cable and start the car to test the belt.

Should there be any play in the serpentine belt on 1998 sunfire

Almost none, the spring in your tensioner arm has left the building if you have play. I said the spring, not the pulley tensioner pulley itself. You need to replace the whole arm, sold at parts stores.

1996 pontiac sunfire cranks but won't start, I just replaced the automatic transmission and serpentine belt

Do you see a light anywhere on the dash that says SECURITY? This means that the anti theft system is shutting down your injectors. Very common on GM vehicles. If so, check out this link.

Need to change the alternator on a 2001 sunfire,2.4 engine, how do i do that?

    Things You'll Need:
    • Battery terminal wrench
    • Serpentine belt removal tool
    • 3/8-inch ratchet
    • 3/8-inch metric socket set
    1. Turn off the engine and place the transmission in park (automatic) or first gear (manual). Engage the parking brake and open the hood. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal using the battery terminal wrench.

    2. Remove the serpentine belt by inserting the end of the serpentine belt tool into the square hole on the belt tensioner and rotating the removal tool clockwise. Unplug the alternator's electrical connector. Remove the bolt holding the positive voltage cable to the alternator using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket. Remove the positive voltage cable from the alternator.

    3. Remove the alternator bracket bolts using a metric socket connected to a 3/8-inch ratchet. Remove the alternator from the car. Place the new alternator in the mounting brackets and reinstall the mounting bolts using a 3/8-inch ratchet connected to a metric socket.

    4. Reinstall the positive voltage cable on the alternator and tighten the retaining nut using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a metric socket. Plug in the alternator's electrical connector. Compress the serpentine belt tensioner using the serpentine belt tool. Reinstall the serpentine belt according to the belt-routing diagram located under the hood.

    5. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery using the battery terminal wrench. Start the engine and verify that the alternator works.
