If you have any idea why this happened, any situation, installment that was done previously to this issue. Please let us know. but I would check the main fuses inside the power distribution box and any in-line fuses at the battery. If you didn't cause this problem then know that there is a short in your wiring. Try to locate the source and have it repaired.

If it was left in valet, that itself wouldn't cause a dead battery. Valet just disables the alarm.

If it is a hydro-electric power steering you could have an electrical fault but if it is engine driven suspect a broken or very worn drive belt.

alternator could be problem if battery volts are low.have alternator tested with engine idling should have 13.5 - 14.5 volts at the battery.check alternator drive belt tension.if alternator is faulty that will cause you to lose power steering because if equipped your vechicle has the electrical power steering need electric power from good strong battery and alternator.if alternator fails power steering will also fail.

Do you know how to voltage drop automotive electrical circuit's using a DMM - digital multi-meter ? Checking main power feed to fuse box etc.... loose connection , bad positive feed cable etc .. Do you know what wiring diagrams are ? Electrical distribution diagrams ?
Electric Testing Techniques You Need to Know

Free wiring diagrams here
Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size. Under system click on electrical distribution then under subsystem click on power distribution . Click the search button then the blue link's . test the circuit's . Plus knowing how the systems work would be good . When you turn the key to start it send a low voltage signal to the BCM - body control module . The BCM sends a message to the PCM/ECM - engine computer to energize the starter relay . A lot of complex electronic's an electrical systems involved .

Recharged battery on my 2006 HHR and the power steering doesn't work. I can turn my steering wheel without a fight.

Unless they have gone to electric power assist on the power steering, should be no correlation.

However, is your accessory belt for running your alternator and power steering pump ok? Is it tight enough.

While an electrical issue should not affect the power steering, a loose or missing belt could cause the (1) alternator to not properly charge the battery and (2) the power steering to not have power.

Have a 99 crv. turn key over and vehicle is totally dead. checked battery, it is ok. thought a fuse may have gone bad but the fuse cover has mysteriously disappeared. any thoughts?

Check if lights or other electric items on the vehicle are also not working.
If all power is missing, re-check battery terminals for corrosion/loosness, including the battery ground chassis connection - if battery and connections ok, look for a blown in line master power fuse or fusible link.
Ensure power is present on the main power bus at the fuse/relay control panel.

No electrical power to anything - even dome light.

Check battery and chassis earth connections are ok.
Check for 12v power at the fuse/power disrtribution fuse bus; - if no power there, trace circuit wiring back to battery.

Battery loose power

I had a very similar problem on my daughter's VW New Beetle. The garage checked the electrical system, installed a new battery, and within days the battery was dead once again. After quite a bit of hunting and tweeking the problem was isolated to an electrical connection to the hood release latch. The electrical connection was shorting out, and the battery was being drained. I replaced the item that was connected to the hood latch, and the problem never happened again. The garage wasn't sophisticated enough to find a "small electrical drain" but the VW dealer was.

Not charging enough to keep battery charged and no dash gauges

The battery charger circuit has failed. If it has a fuse, see if its OK. This input comes from the dynamo, but if your headlights work, then the dynamo is OK. If you are not familiar with the electrical system like checking the leads with a multimeter then best to have a technician(vehicle electrical technician) to check it and if the fuse is OK then the rectifier may require replacement................sodeep
