What do you mean with 'bad valve cover' ?I asume it is leaking oil.it means that the rubber seal is not sealing anymore,it has gone hard.tighten the cover bolts sometimes seals it for a while.to get to the rubber seals the inlet manifold has to be unbolted and moved,a fairly involved procedure but easy to do if you have a manual and standard handtools. The misfiring is likely stray arching of the coils .remove the top plastic cover of the motor andlook when it is very dark [like lightsof in your garage] and look for sparking. If so ,replace sparkplugs or/and leads.[remove inlet manifold also]Tapping lifter, works with oil,try engine oil flush and/or change oil brande.if problem persist replace lifter, lifter undervalve cover

If your asking what to do about it you will have to remove it and fit a new gasket this can be relatively easy if your good with engines if your not this can be extremely hard id take it to mechanic to fix but the costs can be in the thousands for a gasket replacemeant because of the amount of work and time it takes to strip the engine to get to the gasket

99 grand cherokee with 4.7l cylinder 8 misfire. changed plugs, coil pack a few times, still tapping away. exhaust doesnt smell rich. alittle bit of oil on the plug though...

Hi, when you say tapping--you mean the cylinder is making a tapping noise? If yes, that is a bad lifter/lash adjuster that is not allowing the valve to open fully. This will cause a misfire, but even if it didn't, it would soon wear out the can lobe and then require a major repair.
If it's not tapping, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6715318-causes_gasoline_engine_misfires . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me.

Number 4 misfires at idle after intake gasket was replaced

this can be a defective fuel injector or low cylinder pressure due to a bad valve, check both

1 Got a misfire on # 5. 2 Compression is OK on

My thought is a bad coil,or coil boot,or an injector,on number 5 cylinder. Most likely the coil, when it does this.

Misfiring in idle and up hills

I had a problem with misfires on a Buick V-8. My engine would act up the first time it was raised above idle. If you started it at idle it ran smooth, but once it gained rpms that was it. My problem was weak valve springs. Even with hydraulic lifters it did not rattle, click, or give any indication it was running loose. Take off each valve cover separately and while the engine runs put your thumb on the valve spring. If you can make it misfire by pushing down on the valve spring it is weak. Repeat on the other side. It will be messy.

Cylinder misfiring

Hello and welcome to FixYa. check you engine for any noticeable signs of oil excessive in 1 particular area if you don't see any excessive oil stain. Try doing a valve job inspect lifters and push rods make sure they are not warped or clogged replace valve cover gaskets that should take care of most of your issues I would also have timing checked. If knocking continues. replace Rings and check for damaged main rods on the crank shaft in the bottom of the engine which could be knocking around in the oil pan Loosing Oil thru a bad gasket no worries easy fix but burning that much oil is definately a sign of time for engine overhaul or replacement motor. I hope this will help get you going. Please Rate Me. And you can always Ask Me. aymloekh0fg4hpz2e87n86udvs4fowqwshuaaaaasuvork5cyii=

Tapping/Clicking Cylinder One Misfire Pending

Take a pressure test and see what #1 is reading. If all is ok then take off your valve cover and see if your lifters are moving and every thing is tight. see if you don't have a lose rocker.
When you do your pressure test, I would do them all to make sure what you have. If one is bad it will really be lower then the others. That is where your problem will be. Then you would have to go from there. But please let me know how things turn out.
