In order to replace the rear main seal u have to pull the transmission out to access it, u will need a special seal installer tool to install the new rear main "full circle seal", it u don't use the special ford tool the seal will leak again, also if there is a groove worn ion the crankshaft the crank must be repaired or replaced or the or the seal will leak again, so this is avery diff job, a 9 on the scale of 1-10 with 10 being the mos difficult.

The engine doesn't have to be removed however there is quite of bit of work involved with replacement of the rear main seal. if your going to do the work yourself a good investment is a chilton manual from o'reilly's,napa, etc. they run about 20 bucks and have diagrams for all sorts of repairs. also they will tell you the special tools you will need for various repairs.

Rear seal leaking on 2007 ford escape

In order to replace the rear main seal you will need some auto repair tools and experience . this is a big job , the transmission must be removed to replace this seal, also make sure that the seal is the leak,

oil always flows down, a leak on the top of the engine will flow down and drip at the center rear and look like a rear main seal , make sure that is the leak!!.

Depending on what engine you have and if it has 4 wheel drive the time for a shop to do is from 7 to 10 hours depending on engine size and 4wd,

I have a 2003 BMW 325i. We had the oil changed and had discovered a drop of oil under the car the day before. The repair shop replaced our oil pan plug because it was cracked. Today we have 5 or 6 drops...

It could well be a PVC valve. The PVC plumbing on e46s is not one of BMW's best designs, and it needs to be cleaned out every 100k miles if not sooner.
Not likely a rear main. I have never seen a failed rear main seal on a 6 Cyl BMW.

Are you sure it is not power steering fluid? I would be surprised if a 2003 were not leaking a little power steering fluid by now if the hoses have not already been replaced.
Another common oil leak is the hose that feeds oil to the VANOS.
If the leak is toward the rear of the engine, I would look for a valve cover gasket leak.
The service engine soon light is almost certainly unrelated to the oil leak.

Severe oil leak between the engine and the gear box

What color is the oil? I it's reddish, then the input shaft seal on the transmission is leaking. If it's motor oil, the rear main seal is probably leaking. Either way, it needs to be taken to a repair shop as soon as possible.

My son has been doing something called doughnuts?in his car .so has split the main feeder pipe .i have changed that .but now there is fluid dripping from somewhere behind the engine could this be something...

dougnuts are never a good thing. the front seal on transmission could be leaking,if so the fluid will be red.it will drip down between the engine and transmission. if so, the transmission will need to come out fo r a replacement of front transmission seal. if it's clear fluid,it may be a bad steering rack. if it's black oil, it could be a bad rear main engine seal. if bad rear main seal, that transmission will need to come out for replacement of rear main engine seal.a abd rear main engine seal will also leak down between the engine and transmission and be black oil. check for color of the fluid leaking to give you a starting point to diagnose what to look for. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Rear main seal leaks

The only way to repair this is to either pull the engine or transmission. It has a one piece seal. So, in order to repair it the engine and transmission has to be taken apart. Also, the old seal has probably cut a groove in the crankshaft. So, a repair sleeve will need to be installed on the crankshaft to provide a smooth surface for the new seal to ride on.

How do i know if i have a 1 pc rear main seal or a two pc seal on my 1991 mustang 302

You have a one pc rear main seal,You will have to remove trans, from the car to install the rearmain seal.Check freeze plugs, and cam plug for leaks also, while you have the trans out. Also make sure the crank shaft is not damaged with a roove cut in it from the old seal.If it does, purchsae a repair sleeve for the crankshft to put on the crankshaft before installing the rear main seal.I hope this was helpful,if so ,let me know, thanks

Leaking rear main seal.

Replacement is pretty difficult, but if you go to advance auto parts, (cheap trick) you can buy "rear main seal repair" it works. I used it on my dodge dakota, and the leak only persisted for about a week, and was fine after that. Worth a shot, a new seal is very hard to install. You have to basically pull the entire motor up and out to reach it for one, then, setting the seal is just a pain.
