1997 dodge dakota v-8 4 wheel drive has very low oil pressure.do you have to pull the engine to replace the oil pump?

It won't help. Are you just getting low pressure readings or are the rods knocking? If just the pressure is low, Pull the sending unit. Use a wire(bailing wire works great) and clean out the hole for the sending unit. This hole is deep( 6 to 8 inches) and gets clogged up causing low oil pressure readings. Once clean comes the messy part. Disable the coil/s you don't want it to start. Throw some rags over the hole. Crank the engine over a second or two. You need to blow out the crud you just scraped of the engine. You'll want to hold the rags as someone cranks. The pressure will blow them off and oil goes everywhere. If you have rod knock. Replace or rebuild the engine. It's already to late. Depending on engine size, the pump is in the oil pan or behind the harmonic balancer.

Old oil can do that as it gets too thin, filter blocked.
Wrong grade of oil can also cause that or worn pump/bearings.

The oil light is warning the driver the engine has no oil pressure. That could be due to the engine oil level being low, or because of a problem with the oil pump.
is it possible you unplugged or damaged the oil pressure switch on the engine ?

Have you relapced the fuel pump and filter? Take it to a garage and have the fuel pump pressure checked. It very common for fuel pumps or a clog in the line to cause this.

if your oil pressure gauge is reading low, the sensor, instrument cluster gauge or the pump is bad. remove sensor and use an oil pressure test gauge. reading should be measured and verified against manufactures specs. if the pump is bad, damage to the engine will result.

I personally would try pouring a bottle of Berryman's B-12 in the crankcase when it is warm and then changing the oil (which you have tried a similar approach with the flush). Or, I would add approx. 8 ounces of Sea Foam engine additive to the crankcase and drive it around for a little while to see if it helps. As a side note: You don't have to change the oil with the Sea Foam, only the B-12

Severe oil leak form the rear of the engine of a 1996 Dodge Dakota V8


Your rear engine seal is probably shot. I wish I could tell you that it's an easy job to fix. You "could" try some of that engine stop leak stuff which is supposed to repair dried out seals, but I have never had luck with that stuff.

You'll probably need to get the seal replaced, which involves pulling the transmission off. Luckily its a rear wheel drive truck - it's no where near has hard as a front wheel drive!!

'97 Dodge Dakota 5.2l oil pressure problems


How many miles? Sounds like its time for a motor rebuild. I would do a leakdown test, puts the cylinders under pressure and it is supposed to hold it for a certain amount of time. Or if you do not have access to a leak down tester, a compression tester. Sounds like the motor has quite a few miles. If you want to limp it to its death, put some thicker oil in it. 20w50.
