I would also check the detent cable as well just for safe measures might throw off the sensor giving bad code

Might be a sticking torque converter solenoid. The torque converter could be acting as if the clutch is engaged on a manual trans. car.
Is the check engine light on and does it die in reverse too ?

It wont pull its self up hill but will shift through all gears on a lift motor is strong been told it maybe the torque convertor

On the lift there is no load to the vehicle so that would give you the change of gears without problems and I think the tranny is guilty here. The torque converter is the culprit. Sorry, may cost you a pretty pinch. GE

Transaxle clutch wont release when hot stalls engine

Replace the Torque Converter Solenoid in
the transaxle

What you have is like coming to a stop with
a manual shift & not pushing in the clutch & it stalls
the motor

The converter clutch is staying locked & your
trans is connected to the motor

My 1999 buick century 3.1 has engine light on, not shifting to second.

You should be able to replace the solinoid with out pulling the trans but you will need to drop the subframe to gain axcess to the side of the trans

Usaully the shifting is computer controlled, and sounds more like a solenoid valve not functioning properly. Take it to another shop that does tranny work, and see what they say. Don't tell them that the dealer told you that you needed a trans, as they will probably agree right off the bat and try and sell you one too.

2000 Honda Accord Check Engine light on p0740

YOU HAVE A TORQUE CONVERTER PROBLEM. TORQUE CONVERTER CONTROL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION CODES CAN COME FROM ELECTRICLE TO INTERNAL MALFUNCTION. IF YOU START EXPERIENCING A HARD SHIFT OR FREE SPIN TO HARD SHIFT DON'T BE SURPRISED. TRY CHANGING FLUID. THIS MAY HELP. HONDA WOULD HAVE REPLACED TRANS IF UNDER 105 k FOR FREE. IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE TRANS. BUY ONE FROM HONDA, 3 YR WARRANTY AND AS CHEAP AS A REBUILT TRANS. HAVE A QUALIFIED PERSON INSTALL, YOU WILL SAVE ABOUT $500 DOING IT THIS WAY. GOOD LUCK
