Sounds like the fuse has blown. On these 5 series a single fuse controls both the steering colomn adjustment as well as the drivers seat adjustment.

In your glove box, either behind a panel or a drop down fuse fascia is fitted. The fuse your after is a 30a fuse in position 13. Normally a sheet with a labelled diagram will show you where fuse 13 is located. (Or just simply from left to right count 13 spaces!)

Hope this helps!

When i put the key in the ignition the stearing wheel moves but the ignition wont turn and the gear shifter wont move

Here's a company that has pages and descriptions of how toreplace the ignition switch on GM vehicles. They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions. Here is alink to that page. They covers many ofthe in-dash ignition switches from 1997 to 2006 too. Lastly, I would have a new switch in hand before you begin, tosee what you are working on (hidden in the column) and accomplish finishingthis job quickly. Good luck

1998 528i Driver seat adjustment & steering wheel adjustment inop. Fuses 13 & 21 are good. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I had that problem. I have a 1997 528i, the plug on the side of the drivers seat under the plastic panel came unplugged. I had to just simply plug it back in, steering wheel adjusted and seat moved too. Maybe this is your problem too.

Driver seat and steering wont adjust on my 95 740il

here's what you have to do:
#1. make sure the fuse to the seat adjustment is not blown, its usually a 10 or 15amp fuse.
#2. unscrew the cover to the controls on the driver's seat and make sure the harness is not loose or
broken, if the harness fails to attach to the control board correctly the steering wheel and the
seat adjustment will not work, this harness tends to come loose and even brake over time due to
the constant movement when you get in and out of your car.
I hope this solves your problem.

1998 BMW 328i Drivers Seat Problem

gears are probably not engaged. take the seat out, see if the motor drive gear is still within the teeth of the seat rail. if not, force it in. Easy to take out, 4 bolts and the seat comes up and out.
