Brake light stay on after vehicle is turned off

The brake light switch is adjustable. Before adjusting it, make sure the brake pedal is in it's full up position. Sometimes a weak return spring will be the cause.

No break lights, 1999 villager

Check 20A fuse 51 in the fuse junction panel. This feeds power to the brake pedal position switch which, when closed, turns on the high mounted stoplamp and the rear park/stop lamps. The brake pedal position switch could be defective.

I have a 1993 Mercury Villager and my van is turned off but my brake lights are on and will not shut off.

Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs.

Rear tail lights on my 1999 mercury villager won't turn off

Your brake light switch is bad or it has slipped out from where it's mounted, against the brake pedal. The lights will stay on until you change or fix that switch. Have it checked.

1998 Mercury Villager Break light switch

go here for help. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/villagerquest/

Brake light circuit goes through turn signal switch. Do turn signals work ok? Does high mount stop lamp do this too? If you disconnect brake switch, do the lights go off? Do you have trailer tow? Maybe that wire is an issue. I would check brake switch first again. Maybe out of position.

I think you need to adjust the switch.

Installation
  1. Install the BPP switch.
  1. Adjust the BPP switch. Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Tighten the BPP switch locknut to 12-15 Nm (9-11 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the BPP switch electrical connector.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable.

If you have checked all your fuses and the brake light bulbs are good then the brake light switch might be bad, it should be located on a bracket at the top of the brake pedal. when you press on the brake pedal it pushes this switch in to activate the brake light's.
