Question about 1984 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

Starter will not turn over when battery is just slightly low. When Battery is charged, starter turns over and engine starts immediately. Problem came out of the blue, had been very dependable, no provocation like engine work etc.

I bought a new Optima battery, no change, same problem, no sound at all from starter.

  • jimhagen May 12, 2009

I bought a brand new $200 Optima battery, it did nothing to help the problem.

Because this year corvette is controlled by a central computer, any use of a "booster battery" would blow out the brain. This fact is printed in several of the manuals that I own.

Battery probably getting weak. A load test will tell you for sure, and most parts places will do that for free, especially if your buying a new one if required. Even when a battery reads 12 volts, once load on it, if it drops too low, it's time for a new one.

Double check & clean all your connections. What does it do if you hook up a booster battery from car or your old one?

Then I'd have a mechanic or electrical guy put an amp draw test on starter. You say battery had to be fully charged to start, does it not start with new fully charged battery?

I replaced the starter and the battery on my 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette when I turn the key to start I get a click and nothing is there something I'm missing

Try this: Turn on the dome light. When you turn the key to start and hear the click, what does the dome light do? If it stays lit or dims only a little bit, then the battery is OK. If it does completely out, then either the starter is drawing too much current, or the battery charge is too low to turn the starter overt. New batteries are not always fully charged. Now, if there was no problem with the dome light going out, there are a few possible issues:
  1. The new starter is bad.
  2. There is not enough current getting to the starter from the battery. This could be a corroded or loose connection at the starter or battery terminal, or there may be a partially melted fusible link in the cable from the battery to the starter.
  3. The engine may be seized. The starter cannot turn the engine over if the crankshaft is frozen.

1992toyota surf dual batterys both fully charged starter motor slugish to turn over and she will not start

Please check the following:
- Heavy current carrying wires between the two batteries. Any joint may be loose.
- Battery to engine ground thick wire.
- Battery to chassis ground wire.
- Battery to starter motor wire.
- Solenoid switch attached to the starter motor.
- Wash the battery terminals and posts with a mixture of Luke warm water and baking soda. (Immediately wash your hands with soap water)
- Spray wet type contact cleaner on all battery posts.
If the problem persists,
- Replace all the battery, starter and ground wires with slightly thicker wires.
- Service, repair or replace the starter motor assembly. The starter motor could also work fine being purchased from junk.

Does low voltage in ignition have to do with a weak battery

If the voltage drops more than is normal during the ignition cycle, this can be caused by a weak/old battery (Insufficient crank amperage) or by problems with the starter motor. Most auto part shops will test your electrical system for you for free and can determine whether the battery is having problems, the alternator is failing, or the starter motor is faulty.

If i turn the key to start it dnt start bt the key jst turn but dashboard lies nd everythng works wot can the problem be

The battery is flat and does not have enough power to activate the starter or there is a problem with the starter switch. Check the battery first by having the SG of the acid checked. This will immediately tell you if the battery is low, or just charge the battery and see if it will start.

My car won't start. We have tried charging the battery, but it still won't start. It tries to turn over but immediately dies

So, you turn the key, the starter turns on, but then the starter disengages? It could be your starter then. Or do you mean that you hear it and then it immediately dies, like the engine isnt turning over but the starter just locks up? If thats the case you may have an engine thats locked up.

97 chevy lumina wont turn over

The starter solenoid will click when the battery is to low to start the car. Have the battery charged and load tested to make sure it's good. Check the charging system to make sure the alternator is good. Check the wire connections at the starter. If either is loose, the starter won't work.
With a full, known good battery, turn on the headlamps and try starting the engine. If the headlamps stay bright, the contacts in the solenoid are bad. If the headlamps dim greatly or go out, the starter is shorted out and must be replaced.
Also try turning the crankshaft manually with a breaker bar and socket if you suspect that the engine may have seized up.

Car won't start 97 windstar

Check battery voltage (should be at least 12v at battery and starter terminal) If 12v, check to see if you can turn the engine by hand (ign off) If you can't then it's locked up. (internal problem) Also, starter may be defective...just because its in a box, dosen't mean it's good (sad fact)
Hope it's a bad unit...better than a doa engine!!!
Good luck with it!

Hard to start

You have all the symptoms of a low voltage condition in the battery, Kragen and other parts stores like it will test your battery and charging system (alternator) for free, but it is pretty safe to say the battery is toast. Don't reject this solution without the test being done, I think you will find I am right, low battery voltage can cause trouble codes to be set and low fuel pressure to name a few..
