Shop around, but keep in mind your safety too, the brakes them selves are fairly cheap, if too do yourself but you have markups and labor cost involed with any retail chain, 160-180 is high for just pad replacement though,

Depends on where you live... labor should be about 1 hr to 1.5hrs. parts should be about 50-60 dollars.. so it doesn't sound too bad. Calif. labor rates are as high as 125 per hour! not a bad deal out here...

Hopefully you disassembled the brakes on one side at a time. The other wheel will be the model to follow. Tip take a picture of what you find so you know how the parts should look like when the job is finished. I do wonder if you have drum type brakes vs disk. More info please

I have a 1996 chevy cavlier and i drive it for about 15 miles and when i stop it just dies i think it has something to do with the transmission when i wait about 10 mins it will go just find for about...

It is highly probable that your problem is electrical. Most likely High Tension leads from your Coil may be broken. You could try a spares store and purchase a new lead for a few dollars. If you do not know how to change the lead ask a mechanic or auto electrian to do it for you.
If the problem still persists consider having it looked at by an auto electrician or mechanic.
Another possibility is the fuel system which is more involved, more so if fuel injected.

96 chevy beretta..when braking, the left rear of the car squats, left rear tire almost seems to lock up, is this just new brakes time or something more serious?

It sounds like something in the left rear drum is causing it to lock up. It may be contaminated linings, from a leaking wheel cylinder or maybe some broken hardware. You'll have to remove the drum to take a look.

Chevy cobalt Brakes - Rear Drum

It would be a straight forward swap if you can find a car that shares the same chassis as yours with disc brakes on the rear (no cutting or welding) I think that the cobalt ss or the pontiac g6 gt have disc brakes that will bolt right on

You can adjust the shoes outward on the rear by removing the wheels and drums, then above the axle but below the wheel cylinder you will see an arm that is horizontal, pushing both of the shoes outwards. There should be an adjustment nut that you can turn to extend the arm to push the shoes out.

I wouldn't think that its a problem with abs , sounds like they didnt turn the drums right . they are probably still egg shaped (warped) thats why they lock-up before the front . I would replace them with new ones instead of having them turned . some drums get so warped that they cant get them back round .
