My daughter had went to a auction and bought a 1994 jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4,it ran great as far as we knew. She paid for it and as we were getting ready to leave, she put it in reverse and it made awful sounds,my nusband said its the transmission, the jeep would not go in reverse. My daughter went from very happy ,to i bought a lemon. Now we are dealing with trying to buy a Transmission and having someone put it in and no luck.Im just upset because back in Jan her 2004 vehicle was totaled a truck pulled out in front of her,and now she is dealing with a broken down jeep, that we can not get anyone to help us with.We found a transmission on line, they said we have to have major shop to have it get delivered, please give us a break. If there is anyone out there that can help us we live in Wichita,ks please contact casinolady3138@yahoo.com,our daughter loves the jeep and said she wants it fixed up,please help us,Thankyou.

You have to be careful that it is not the safety neutral switch.since stall means different things to different people,it is hard to tell exactly what is the issue.if the safety neutral switch, which is wired to the start and ignition circuits is bad,it could kill the engine.
jack up the vehicle and look for bad or shorted wires or connectors before doing anything else.
the other thing is how it behaves with no load on it. put a floor jack under the rear differential and raise it just enough for the wheels to be off the ground a couple inches.put it into reverse with no load and see if the wheels turn in 2wd mode.

My 2001 jeep GC you can hear it engage when put in reverse and starts moving very slow but when you give it gas it does nothing my shifter felt funny going from rev to park immediately before this problem...

the trans can do many things, good bad or weak.
first off, what does it do in all cars.
PRNDL21? (shift lever, worst case)
do all selections work or all fail, or what.? just Drive fails.

does nothing, what does that mean.?
unless engine stalled it did do something (RPM that is something)

  1. car dont move, RPM races (called slip) (with right foot actions)
  2. car does not move, but RPM goes to say 1500 max. and dont move.

#1 is trans problem or shifter not moving shift cables end to end.
#2 is weak engine.

two opposite fails, not related.

Jeep starts once it warms up it will die out but will start up again it might take all day before it does again

the 4.0L I-6 inline 6, over 5 million made. (owned 3 for 500k miles)
it can only be 3 things, bad engine, bad spark, bad fueling.
(and others, EGR stuck etc)
but you never stated the GOOD,just bad.
does IT Have full power up hills , if it does start.? hot or cold power?
a key fact,
and key fact 2? can you save the stall, with a fast right foot.?????
stalls 101:
  1. never ever tuned up in decade. (most owners !)
  2. stalls for bad spark ,see #1
  3. stalls for lack of fuel, see #1 and new fuel filter.
  4. EGR stuck open engine will stall. (some 4Ll have no EGR)
  5. Lost fueling,
  6. Flooding

there are simple tests to find it, my guessing is fruitless waste.

ALL day no starts.
cranks robustly does it (guess yes)
(lost spark, test for lost spark x6 (and at coil)
lost fueling, Spark trips dry test.
flooding, spark tips dripping in raw fuel, test.

so ever get a tune up,or just driving it till it drops dead, like most do.

My grand cherokee stalls when shifted in reverse. It dies immediately. this is an intermittent problem. I was told it was a solenoid in the trans controlled by the transmission ecm.

I had a similar problem with my gc 4.0. It would stall when shifting from reverse to drive but not all the time. Also erratic gear changing up and down and slipping. I took it to a garage and had the transmission filter and fluid changed (but it may be something some people can do there self if mechanically minded) And this cured the problem and have alot smoother gears. I did use the Jeep ATF +4 which was recommended not dex 2 so fingers crossed i dont have any more problems.

make sure your idle air control motor is working, if you give and hold gas pedal a little will it stay running in drive.

Transmission slipping or stalling around 45 mph and down shifts

if fluid isn't burned, shifts aren't slipping or flairing and you did not find a large amount of debris in the pan, chances are that the electronic shift control is malfunctioning. Have someone check it out.

Does the vehicle crank for extended period of time upon first starting? If so the fuel pump needs replacing.
