Check your oil pressure gage, if hopping around its either sensor or screen clogged on oil pump. If its been more than six years on your fuel filter this could be clogged. Or your idle control valve might need to be replaced.

Rain bird e-6c on program a, 4 zones, when on auto is completed run does not shut off but starts over on the next run. Controller is set up as per instructions.

Check to see what time the other run is set up for. If the time is within the normal run time for the first run, it will start the second run when the first is completed.

What would make a 1988 2.5L celebrity crank an run some time but other times have to spray starter fluid in injection to start

Having to spray starter fluid is an indication of lack of fuel. Possible restricted fuel filter or fuel pump getting bad. If the problem occurs in the AM when vehicle is cold and is started for the first time, there may be an issue with the coolant temp sensor providing inaccurate information to the computer. Have the computer scanned and monitor operating parameters of the sensors to help isolate the cause of the problem

As with any no start issue, you will need to check for spark and fuel pressure when it won't start to know how to proceed.

Engine experiences extended cranking to start it at times

Listen at the fuel tank when the key is turned on. The pump should run for a short time and shut off. If it continues to run, the pump is worn out and should be replaced. The fuel filter should be replaced if it hasn't been done lately.
