This sounds like a linkage adjustment that has slipped with time; shouldn't be costly to cure and because of the potential hazard, I hope your parking brake is good.
If you aren't a DIYer, check your local BBB pages to find an honest transmission shop so they don't 'fix' something that isn't broken.
