What are the.......?
overheated engine. (pinging to destruction)
leaking (same, end of engine, in many cases)

I saw a corvette going fast one day, and saw his lower rad hose fail
at 70mph. (catastrophic, looked like Niagara falls)
i honked and waved, he flipped me off, and boom
he burned is motor up. (you made me remember that, at my age amazing.)

lets do the leak test.
get engine fully hot. no 1./2 way , fully, fully is 180 to 200F .
gauge in dash be damned. I pyro gun it. The honda manual shows better ways, drive it 20 miles, park.
then let it idle , doing the RAD fan test in the FSM.
the rad fan comes on , this fact tells you its REALLY HOT AND NORMAL.
so now just look with eyes, keep hands in pockets.
look at every hose and cooling parts on engine
see leaks.
at this time there is 14PSI coolant pressure, and any leaks
are all very obvious, and childs play to find, just look, and bingo
all hoses, waterpump (and its weep hole) and the RAD.
all big and small coolant lines. (many)

1997 Mercury Tracer.. Automatic trans. Parked= no leak. Running= bad leak. Stopped after driving= bad leak for about 1 min then diminishes to nothing.

If you turn off the water pressure eg shutoff valve in your garden hose, the water in your hose doesn't come out. Same thing with transmission. Sounds like you need new seal(s), transmission needs to be removed from car. The question is it less costly to keep adding fluid or repair leaks

What are symptoms of a bad water pump?

Yes, it could be a bad water pump, or a host of other problems. Does your car have an electric fan, or clutch fan? Do you hear it run? What color is the smoke? All of these things can tell you if your water pump is bad, or something much worse. Number 1, how many times have you driven it while it over heated? Check the oil. If it looks very thin, then you have a big issue. If you can take some oil, put it in the palm of your hand, and with your index finger of the other hand, make small fast circle motion on the oil. If you are left with a puddle in the middle of your palm, then you have water mixing with oil. (A very serious problem) Best case, just your water pump. Worst case, blown head gasket, warped head, (worse) Cracked block(new engine required)
