You will need some tools, 1\2" socket 6 point, NOT 12 point, with a 3" and 6" extension, and maybe a 1\2"deep well socket, and swivel, perferably 3\8 drive wratchet,a 9\16" socket for the battery cable at the starter but it could be 5\8" socket on some starters,,and depends on if the starter brace that hooks to the starter then to the engine is hooked up you will need a 3\8 socket.....you dont have to unhook the battery to do this,Fords use a solenoid on the fender that sends power to the starter.there will be i think 3 bolts that holds the starter on,so take them out, then unhook the brace to the engine,be careful the starter doesnt fall in your face, then unhook the big cable to get it out of your way, pull the starter down....reverse the process for installation....the exhaust cross over pipe and\or exhaust manifold may get in the way

Starter makes a grinding noise. and wont start changed starter and have the same problem. changed crank position senser and it worked for a while. changed it again but didnt fix the problem.

if the starter is making a grinding noise when you turn the key, it's one of several possiblites. 1. Bad Starter. 2. Bad flywheel. 3. You need starter shims that fit between the starter and the motor. Most starters will bolt straight up but sometimes the gears get too close so you need to shim them apart.

Car will not start first thought it was the battery which turned out not to be true then found out it was the starter, starter has been replaced but car still will not start. It clicks twice and thats it...

did you change the solenoid with the starter or just the starter? if you changed both i'm not sure. if you just changed the starter and not the solenoid you should change the solenoid.

Ford F-150 1999 5.4 Liter. I changed starter now truck shakes!!!

if it didn't shake before the starter change, and the black marks were not there before, you need to see if the positive cable is getting hot to the touch, double check the large battery cables going to starter that they are on correctly ,dont go by color of wire ,visually follow each wire to starter to make sure its a ground or hot one, last possibility
would be a dead short in starter.

My starter kicks out before the car starts how can i tell if its the starter or celinoid

It's most likely the "bendix drive" in the starter kicking out. It's the part that engages the starter to the flywheel. Changing a starter without changing the solenoid is like having a slice of bread without any butter. Change them as a pair. Hope this helps.

How to change starter selinoid

the starter selinoid is on the starter itself. normally a parts dealer will never seel you a starter selinoid individually but they will sell the starter with the selinoid. but you cant change the selinoid without changing the starter

I need to change my starter on a 1991 mercury sable

Starter are one of the easier mechanical engine parts to change.

1) DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
2) Disconnect the electrical cable running to the solenoid on the starter.
3) Remove the two bolts holding the starter in place.
4) Pull the starter out.

To install another starter, do the above steps in reverse order in reverse.

Changing the Starter

The starter is located on the passenger side rear of the engine Two bolts(size13mm??) Be sure to disconnect the pos. battery cable first, before disconecting the wires from the starter, otherwise, you'll ground those wires out and have fireworks. Also, draw out a diagram of the wiring before removing them,so you'll know where they go back on your new starter.
