How do you remove the body from the chassis?

To remove the body from the chassis you need to unbolt the body mount bolts, disconnect all linkages such as throttle, shift, etc., electrical connections and wiring harnesses, brake, fuel and emission lines, heater hoses and AC lines, and lift the body straight up off the frame. You almost have to have access to a car hoist to do this, and to do the job succesfully requires a pretty high level of mechanical aptitude.

Well, that's it ...but if you really have to ask how, you might need to hire some qualified help such as a body and frame repair shop.

Make sure you have good ground not only to the engine but from either battery to body and chassis or engine to body and chassis.

I hear a electrical noise from alternator when turn on acc it stops when I remove + from ignition

Hi Could be worn brushes on slip ring or faulty diode on the rectifier. Check all the earths body to chassis, chassis to engine.
Check current draw with ac on and off may have a faulty fan motor or compressor overloading the alternator the old 253 only had a low amp output alternator.

how to change,? how to remove it and then? what?
its not like a light bulb....
the cars whole body, needs replacement. the whole thing.
this car has real frame, so you must detach all harness ends
from all drivline parts. including in the engine bay.
then all shift linkage.(on a 5speed it be the shifter too) after console removal (center)
then all those body to frame, bolts.
take sharp left turn and body and you falls of car. (jokinig)

now lifting it, you will need, like 8 people to do that by hand
or a gantry crane
or a huge tree and chain hoist.
lifting the body, invites damage to the body, or to the newone going back on. It can be done with many jacks and huge boards to protect t
the body, and jack up the body in stages, and then slide the rolling
chassis from under the body.
my guess? is you have a car with good body bad driveline
then one more bad body with good driveline, right, is that the store?

It will be a 2 person job. Open the door and remove the bolts for the hinges on the body panel . The door will be heavy some form of support under the door edge (Chassis stand ) will assist the partner to hold the load.. If there are wires in the door then disconnect at the connection immediately inside the body behind the kick panel cover before undoing the bolts..

Cant get power from batt when turn the key

A possible problem, a bad electrical connection, I would remove and clean the battery earth connection to the chassis and the chassis to body. If you connect a volt meter to the battery earth terminal and an earth terminal on the body, then the engine and try to start, you should not get a reading, if you do then there is a bad connection. It is strange connecting the meter across two earths, but if there is a bad connection, power finds the easiest path, which is the meter and it will give a reading, max reading acceptable 0.5 volts

Do I need to remove the body to remove the motor in a '98 navigator? If so how do I remove the body easily?

There is no easy way to remove the body high enough at home to be able to roll the chassis out from underneath. You can remove the engine from above but you will need to remove all the front engine parts and radiator to gain clearance. And even so its a tight fit.

hi from uk the fact you mention g/box has been changed would suggest that your probs with electrics would point to either an earth cable from battery to the body/chassis has not been refitted after g/box removal/refit or the lead that provides power for electrics which connects to the starter solenoid on the same connection as the positive + lead from battery is either loose or not connected ? with horn/wipers /lights not working these components get their earth from the cars body/chassis however is it possible that starter lead was disconnected b4 disconnecting the battery earth lead ??? thn accident of shorting to earth(spark ) which would blow the fuses for these components ? check em out ?

So go ahead and do it. It's not clear whether you're actually asking a question here. It doesn't help that you haven't stated which VW you have. Beetle, Karmann Ghia (Type 14 and 34), Variant?

If you're asking whether to do it then the old ones are rotten and need replacing, so yes.

If you're asking how to do it then with respect that's a question far beyond the remit of a simple free question and answer site like this. It's not overly difficult in itself if the vehicle is mostly solid, but you need to be able to weld and you ideally need to remove the body from the chassis. But we're talking of a 41 year old car and only you can see what condition it's in: removing the body (normally an easy job) might not be if the shell is also rotten and the chassis itself may well collapse just behind the front axle tube as soon as the body comes off. Once the body is off it may mean that you're better replacing the chassis entirely. One thing is guaranteed: whatever rust you can presently see will be just a fraction of what's really there.

There are entire chapters of specialist VW restoration books devoted solely to the question you've asked, and so there's no point in re-inventing the wheel. Buy or borrow a suitable book and join the VW owners' club in your country. The knowledge and expert advice you'll gain will far more than repay the financial investment in both.

Can the body of a tr4 be taken off the chassis

If I remember correctly you have to take the front wings off first and then you can unbolt the tub, if you can leave the doors on do so, as if the sills were not quite fitted perfectly or are slightly corroded they could distort, with the doors on all will be kept square. Dont forget to treat any surface rust or bare metal that is hidden by the chassis normaly, I use POR15.

When you say 'chassis number' do you mean an identification code for the 'body'? If so, here's a quote from a manual (2003 Wrangler) :

A metal body code plate is attached to the floor pan
under the drivers seat. Disengage the snaps
attaching the carpet to the floor pan to read the
information. There are seven lines of information on
the body code plate. Lines 4, 5, 6, and 7 are not used
to define service information. Information reads from
left to right, starting with line 3 in the center of the
plate to line 1 at the bottom of the plate...
