CHECK PROPORTIONAL VALVE NEXT TO MASTER CYLINDER,I HAVE SEEN THEM BLOCK FLUID GOING TO REAR BRAKES.

For some reason these vehicles you need to bleed brakes several times, had same problem, so air hangs up in lines somewhere it apears. When you say brakes sticks, describe it better, locked up, or dragging on rotors?

Rear wheels lock up on my dodge dakota


What year Dakota? Drum Brakes?

Lock up when?

If you use the parking brake,then the cables
have to be replaced because of rust.

With proper brake maintenance once a year, there is no
reason to say they lock up while driving

Master cylinder and/or brake booster could be the problem. A tiny bit of air in the system will effect your braking abilty. A fault in the ABS system would prompt the computer to trigger the ABS light. If you have brake shoes on the rear, make sure they are properly adjusted. Hope this helps.

troubleshoot the master cylinder first , you need some one to pump the pedal. open a brake line at the master cylinder with the line open put your finger on the open port . with all the stregth you have and the might you got have him pump on the pedal and your finger blocking the open port on the master cylinder, did squirt fluid out and you could not stop it, then that portion of the master cylinder is good, now do the next port if you can hold pressure then the master cylinder is non op, you need another one, Okay that is to test the master cylinder, If master cyliner is okay HERE IS THE FIX the reason you cant get a pedal is because you are a 4x4 the wheels must be on the ground,if the wheels are not on the ground there is a cut off valve on the rear differntial that will not allow fluid to pass out to the rear cyclinder put the tires on, block the wheels and someone there helping and looking after you and bleed the system remeber four wheels on the ground , by the way do you see the differntial lever that shut off fluid when wheels are not touching ground all 4X4 has this safety feature it so you dont lock the wheels when you fly in the air

1- New master cylinders could also fail, possibly due to bad quality replacement parts or maybe even just a factory fault on a good quality master cylinder.

2- If you had blown a rear wheel cylinder, you most deffinatly should still have had a form of front brakes. the reason for this is as follows... For this very saftey meassure manufactures design the container for the brake fluid supplying the master cylinder in two internally, so this would mean that if you where to drain all the brake fluid through the rear wheel cylinders an acceptable amount of brake fluid should still remain within the one compartment of the reservoir for the front brakes to still opperate.

3- Leaking rear wheel cylinders should have been noticed by the technician who installed the master cylinder, the reason for this is because the brake fluid would have had to be bled through the system at each wheel. even though it would have been performed from the back of the wheel one would expect the technician to notice the brake fluid dripping out behind the brake drum.

The liquids does not compress, so there is no reason for the brake pedal to go to the floor. If you have no brake pressure, after bleeding the system, then the master cylinder is wasted. The brake master cylinder leak might be Internal, or External. Check around the master cylinder for any external leak. The break fluid is an excellent paint eater, so clean any leak before you remove the Master Cylinder. The new Master Cylinder needs a bench bleeding process, before installed in your car.

Rear pads how to reset calibre


You must have backed the caliper up to get the new pads in. This sends the EXTRA brake fluid that has been added into the master cylinder. (it usually overflows if you haven't removed some fluid with a "turkey baster" device). Cars with disc brakes will self calibrate as the braking wears the pads down. If your brakes have "Locked -up" it may also be the Anti-lock brake feature depending on your vehicle.

Losing brake fluid(2001 kia sportage)


Check the rear wheel cylinders if you have drum brakes on the rear. Check the master cylinder cap to be sure it's on right & snug. Use D.O.T. 3 fluid,not synthetic. If you're losing fluid there's a reason. Check the front brake pads & slides for the calipers,could be frozen with rust & eating up the pads. Fluid would seem low if the pads are shot.
