1 Answer

Car idles too high. Had a replacement idle control valve 3 months ago which resolved the same problem, but it has restarted again now.

Check TPS (throttle position switch)connections and TPS switch are renound for issues may need adjusting base idle, also check pcv hole in throttle body base manifold area clean out throttle body also if carboned up
is also possible this idle air control valve (IAC) is sticky due to carbon build up clean with carby cleaner or some sort of solvent

Honda stalls going from idle to driving

I recommend doing a leak down test. It could be valves or blow by. Also try cleaning the idle air control valve (IAC-V), the exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR), and fast idle valve (if it has one).

Car only starts when you give it allot of gas, only stays running at 3 to 4 thousand rpm's. Battery light goes on and it stalls completly

Sounds a lot like the Idle air control valve, replaced one of these in an escort a couple months ago for similar symptoms with success. Clean Throttlebody and Idle air control ports at same time. May want to check for proper fuel pressure also.

In my 2000 Saturn SL1 I am experiencing very high idle (2000 rpm warm - higher cold). I have cleaned the throttle body and the idle air control valve with no improvement. What next, replace the idle air...

You could try replacing the idle air control valve but I would obtain one from a local salvage yard, its cheaper and you are not certain if thats the problem, another thing i would check is your intake manifold gasket where it meets the cylinder head, if tha gasket is cracked or leaking it will allow excess air to enter the engine and make it idle higher, the easiest way to verify this is get a can of carb and choke cleaner and spray it all around the intake gasket area, if the engines idling characteristics change drastically then the gasket is bad and needs to be replaced if theres no change in the idle I would start looking for vacumm leaks and the idle control valve issue, which you specified.

The car accelerates without being given any gas, engine is idling high Also, it periodically turns over and won't start.I had the transmission intake replaced 5 months ago.

sounds like a vacum leaks, listen for it youll hear a hiss,,,or a bad iac valve, idle air control, that will cause a hard start and high idle and running by itself,

your idle air control solenoid is searching for the right position to be in it has to relearn your idle.a weak battery will cause this problem if the battery is old just replace it and your problem will be fixed

High idle speed on 1987 ford F150

it may be this or the ( pcv valve ) pcv get clogged alot on old fords. The idle air control valve (IAC) control the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the throttlebody . This valve allows air to bypass the throttle plate. The amount of air is determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal.

TESTING
  1. Make sure the ignition key is OFF.
  2. Disconnect the air control valve.
  3. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the terminals of the valve solenoid.
Due to the diode in the solenoid, place the ohmmeter positive lead on the VPWR pin and the negative lead on the ISC pin.
  1. If the resistance is not 7-13 ohms replace the air control valve.

Car dies when slowing down or stopping

Disconnect the air hose going to the Idle Air contorl Valve and plug the line with a small screw.
if the problem of the idle goes away and the car runs smooth and doesn't stall at stops, it's the air control valve housing sensor, it's basicall the whole unit thats no good. If it still stalls, clean the throttle body housing and all parts in where the air gets sucked in, put a rag underneath to keep the dirt from dripping down, start the car with somebody inside the car reving up the engine to 2000rpm's to 2500rpm's, then spray in to the throttle with burst of throttle cleaner and you will see the gunk keep coming out, you may have to change your spark plugs after this is done also.

Good Luck BigWillie
