Question about 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1981 chevy monte carlo starting problems?

Sometime it will crank and sometimes it won't.It doesn't need a battery. It will turn over but not start.I have already changed the coil with a brand new one.when it doesn't start you can put a jumper box on it it will crank right up and run. When it cranks up on it's own or you jump it off, it run like there is nothing wrong.

When not starting, do you have spark? If yes, is it good spark or weak? Also, have you checked starter draw? (with battery wire disconnected from cap, crank engine and read battery voltage. If it drops to 9.5 or less, the starter is drawing too much ) if draw is high, starter may be robbing coil voltage. A jumper will add amps to starting and can overcome drop.Once running, the starter isn't being used and alternator is supplying voltage.

if you just hear a clicking when trying to start the car charge the battery to full, all of the items you listed will work with a low battery , but it doesn't have high enough amps to turn over the car .

How do I reset the computer in a 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo? The electrical has been acting "strangely" the last month, and then suddenly refused to start. The battery still lights up the car. Since it...

You can reset the computer by disconnecting the battery terminals from the battery and touching them together for 60 seconds. This probably won't fix your problem.

Is the 'weird noise' the normal noise you hear when you crank a car over? If so, that's the starter. If you don't hear it, you have a starter issue. You may want to try holding the brake, turning the key on to the first click, pulling the shifter into neutral, and trying. Sometimes this works and indicates a failing park/neutral switch. If not that, put car back into park. Have someone gently tap the starter with a hammer while you crank the engine. Sometimes this will jar a dead starter into motion. In that case, change the starter.

Ring back with more details if you need.
