Question about 2000 Alfa Romeo 156

1 Answer

Ignition problem Our Alpha has been difficult to start for about 2 weeks. The fault is mechanical rather than electrical with the lock barrel not turning without a lot of 'jiggling' about. Once this barrier is passed the car has no issue starting. It appears that yesterday I managed to engage the steering lock when parking it in the drive and now, putting the key into the ignition as normal will not even disengage this, let alone turn the ignition (regardless of how much the key is 'jiggled'!)Car is needed tomorrow for work - HELP.

You've tried pulling steering wheel hard from one side to the other while turning key? Always try to avoid shutting vehicle off with wheels turned, keep straight when turning off. Are you parking on a sloped drive by chance? If yes, press hard on brake pedal when trying to turn key, if no luck, try rocking car forward ,back, while trying to turn key.

Have you tried spraying some lube such as white lithium grease in key slot, using little red tube and inserting as far as possible? Then work key in & out a few times to get things moving as they should.

Tried jamming shifter into park a little more too? I'm just grasping at everything that has worked for me in the past on different vehicles with same problem, hope you understand, but it sounds like you've tried everything already.

Have 99 VT, went to replace ignition barrel, but cannot turn to on position to unlock barrel.. Inside is locked shut, how do i remove barrel..help!!

The short answer is you can't. Unless the existing barrel will turn the lock assembly will need to be removed when some knocking around, compressed air or penetrating oil could free the mechanism just enough.

A lot depends on how difficult it is to remove the lock. Some are very difficult and require the removal of half the dashboard and steering column and a steady hand for some precision drilling or clever chiseling. You might decide to take a shortcut from the official method and by the time the lock has been removed it will be in no condition to be refitted.

Good luck!

How do I get my car keys out when it is stuck in my Nissan Micra K12 ignition?

Try to turn the steering wheel gently from side to side while pulling on the key. Quite often the steering lock engages with the steering wheel shaft and it makes it difficult to get the key out while the shaft puts pressure on the lock.

The hatchback/boot door tends to open itself on occasions and also be difficult to shut

I suspect that the problem is a badly adjusted latch mechanism.. Try that first. Make sure that any cable opening or electric opening latch is properly locking

The car will turn over but won`t start but if I turn the key on and jump the starter it starts

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone kaput. The ignition switch come in two pieces, an electrical switch and a mechanical switch.

The switch electrical portion can be replaced separatly from the mechanical portion (tumbler that the key engages). It is not a real difficult repair but requires some mechanical knowlege of how the column is assembled.

This can be verified with electrical test equipment prior to buying a new electrical switch.

I have an Isuzu Rodeo and the key is stuck in the ignition any idea how to get it out? Year 2000

replace the whole ignition barrel with new key and get key programmed by dealer
can remove barrel and key by removing steering column covers turn ignition to on position and with small shank screw driver push in hole in outer top rear section of barrel assembly then pull out ignition lock barrel with key in it. fit new lock barrel and key, program new key into system and can get door lock barrels coded to suit new key or get code for old key and cut new key so it fits mechanical locks on the rest of the vehicle (just wont turn in ignition) 2 keys for vehicle.

Ignition switch / Lock Barrel seems loose.

Its more time consuming than you would think. It involves the following tasks;1) Disassembling the lower dashboard, below the steering wheel 2) Actually replacing the lock, which is difficult because of special allen tools required, and locating the release pin. 3) carefully reconnect the wiring (simple task) 4) changing ALL the other locks, if you desire to have a master key again.( about 5 of them)

Key's snapped off inside ignition

Hi I would suggest you ring the Automobile association, and see whether one of their mobile mechanics can solve your problem. extracting a car key from the barrel may be more difficult than it appears. He, the mobile man may have done it before and have the right tools for the problem.

Carrera 4 ignition barrel problem

I repaired it my self thanks. :)

The starter switch must be at fault as this part has the zero ignition and start mechanism itstilled in side of it and the spring load has gone faulty due to ware and tare. so I removed it and replaced with a new one and now everything works as normal.
